SUMMER
Common sense rules keep swimming fun and safe
Summer and swimming go hand in hand and there's no better place to look for water fun than the Lakeland Community. There are public beaches on Milford's Waubee Lake and at Syracuse's Lakeside Park that have lifeguards on duty during swimming hours. There are some simple common sense rules that keep swimming fun and safe. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself and your family with the following rules: Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system. , Don't overeat before swimming and always - allow at least one hour after eating to avoid cramps in the legs and arms. Before entering the water be aware of conditions which exist in the area. It’s a good idea to ask other swimmers about depth and the lake bottom. Summer Reading dub at Syracuse Library The Syracuse Public Library will again have its Summer Reading Club for area children. The club will begin as soon as school is out. Hie theme for this year's reading club will be “Make Your Own Adventure, Read” There will be a special program for preschool age children entitled “The Moon Goon.’’ A pleasant way for youngsters to spend summer afternoons will be found at the library, with books of interest for all ages. Library hours remain the same all year long, with the library open noon to 5 p.m. daily, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Throughout the summer special books are featured and new books come in often. For adults only, the library is open from 7-9p.m. on Tuesdays.

Never go in the water depending on a rubber tube, raft or floatation device if you are a beginner These can puncture and leave you in water well over your head. Never dive or jump into cold water; this causes numbness of the body and can lead to drowning. Divers should always make sure they have eight feet of water if they are novice, and nine feet for the diving spring board. Do warm up exercises before a fast or competitive swim, thus avoiding cramps. Swimming like any other recreation requires using your head. Don't roughhouse in the water, ducking swimmers and holding them under. Don't take dares and rest if you become cold or tired. There are water games that if supervised can be safe and a source of exercise and fun. A few are Duck Ball, Float Tag, Treasure Hunt, volleyball, basketball and baseball. Swimming should be taught to children when they are young under a supervised program such as offered through the American Red Cross, the YMCA or one offered at a public high school. If you never learned to swim; it’s not to late. There are many adult beginning classes and many doctors recommend swimming to older adults to maintain physical fitness without the stress of other exercise. An important part of safety in the water deals with rescue. If you see a person drowning or struggling in the water and you are not a strong swimmer avoid diving or jumping in after them. If you can throw a life line in or a life preserver to the swimmer you may be of more help and avoid your own drowning. Call for help or get help if it is close by. Never over estimate your own strength.
