37th annual Mermaid Festival at North Webster June 19-26
This year’s Mermaid Festival will begin on Saturday. June 19, with a 5,000 meter run at 8:30 am. and conclude Saturday, June 26, with the parade at 4 p.m. and crowning of the “Queen of Lakes” at 8 p.m. Featured as this year’s King of Sports is 21-year-old national hockey star Wayne Getzky. Getzky plays with the Edmonton Oilers of Edmonton, Canada. He set NHL all time records during the season just completed, scoring 92 goals making 120 assists, for a total of 212 points. \ On Saturday. June 19, the annual Mermaid Ball will be held at Camelot Hall at 9 p.m. This year the band “Coming Home” will provide the music. Throughout the week the men’s softball league, youth league and girls’ softball tournaments will be played. Monday, June 21, a treasure hunt for children will be held at the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. and on Tuesday a greased pole contest, with cash prizes, will be held at 7 p.m. The Merchants' Building will open at 6 p.m. Monday, June 21. The Pepsi taste test will be held in the Merchants’ Building all week. Cuties Wednesday The Cutie Parade will be held Wednesday, June 23, on SR 13 at 7 p.m. with the Cutie King and Queen Contest following in the school gym. The Mermaid Parade awards and trophies totaling nearly SB,OOO will be given for best bands, floats, cars and walking units. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. on SR 13 in North Webster. This year’s “Queen of Lakes” will be crowned at 8 p.m. in the school gym. The contestants will be interviewed by district judges on Sunday. June 19. On Friday the swimsuit competition will be held in the gym at 7 p.m. The theme for this year’s pageant is

Fame and the Lee Stewart Dancers will perform at Saturday evening’s program. The contestants are eliminated down to five finalists and those girls are then asked questions on stage before a queen is chosen by the judges. The “Queen of Lakes" will receive an engraved loving cup, engraved wrist watch, a S2OO scholarship and will reign as “Queen ot Lakes” for a year.
