'America the Beautiful' July 4 Flotilla theme
This year’s Wawasee Flotilla Festival, on the July 4 week end. has been named ‘ America the Beautiful.” The events are expected to fill the Fourth of July week end. Os principal interest is the change of the starting and finish area of the Flotilla for boat and other craft that will circle Lake Wawasee on Sunday afternoon, July 4, the high point of the busy weekend. All Flotilla entries will have as their marshaling area a site in front of the old fish hatcheries at the southeast corner of the big lake. Friday's Events The first activity of the festival will be Friday evening. July 2. The second annual bicycle race will begin at 7 p.m. at the Syracuse City Park. Race chairman Bill Beemer stated the event consists of two races and the course will be the same as last year. The shorter 6.5 mile race will make two laps traveling the north shore of Syracuse Lake. East Shore Drive. County Line Road and W. E. Long Drive to the finishing area at Syracuse Park. The longer 13 mile course will travel the same route four times Trophies will be awarded to first place in each division Ribbons will be offered to the next five finishing positions. There is an entry fee There will be four age groups: 18-years-old and under; 19-35; 36-49; and 50 years old and over Saturday's Events A new event, a swim-a-thon, dubbed the Flotilla Super Swim, will begin at 7:30 am. on Saturday. July 3. Registration will be at 7 a m. Participants. expected to be 100 strong, will line up sponsors and have the option of swimming laps at the school pool or make a two-mile swim across Lake Wawasee Those making the lake swim are expected to be physically cabable of the open water event and must furnish their own observer row boat and life

preserver. Swimmers will enter the water at the Richard Green residence and swim a two-mile stretch to the Jack Danhome. Dick Wysong. vocational director at Wawasee High School, is chairman for the Super Swim. The Syracuse Wawasee Lake Patrol will furnish safety control. The event is to raise funds for the purchase of racing touch pads for the school pool. Following the swim-a-thon is the MailJournal Flotilla Road Race at 9 a.m. The fifth annual event will include a 3.3 mile and and an eight-mile race. The 3.3-mile race will be on the county roads around Maxwelton Golf Course and the north shore of Syracuse Lake and the long race around both Maxwelton Golf Course and Syracuse Lake. Both races will begin and end at Syracue city park. There will be 90 plaques awarded to the first three finishers in 15 categories in both races and trophies to the overall first place male and female finishers in both events. Half of the entry fees will go to the building program of the Lakeland Daycare Center. The Syracuse Park and Recreation Department is hoping to duplicate its highly successful ‘day in the park’ again ' L
this year on Saturday. Art and craft booths, an elephant ear booth and face painting will be in the park as well as several musical groups. The final event of the day will be the Cromwell fireworks display at the old Fish Hatcheries shortly after dusk. Sunday's Activities Sunday's festivities will include the traditional Boat-In Worship from the pier in front of Oakwood Park. The service runs from 8:30-9 a m The big event of the week end and the day is the Festival Parade which will step off at 1 p.m. The theme is "America The Beautiful,” and a series of aerial salutes will precede the start of the Flotilla. Floats will travel clock-wise around the lake unless wind conditions dictate otherwise.

SUMMER
Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded in six categories: antique and classic boats; residential; industrial; commerical; institutional; and junior (18 years of age and under). In addition there will be a presentation of the prestigious Earl Money Award and the best overall entry will receive the Commodores Trophy plus a perpetual traveling trophy and a SSOO cash prize. Again this year there will be no restriction on the size or type of boat used as a float, except that is should be seaworthy and capable of maintaining a 10 miles per hour speed. Concluding the week end of festivities, the traditional Fourth of July fireworks will light the sky over Syracuse Lake at dusk. The staging area will be the Syracuse Park.
