SUMMER Lake Wawasee: Indiana's largest natural lake
It's hard to believe that something so beautiful and mysterious as Lake Wawasee, Indiana's largest natural lake, with its colorful history of Indians, white settlers, people of renown and elusive gangsters, was formed by something so massive and cold as a glacier But in fact, the glaciers that moved across northern Indiana some 10-15 thousand years ago. were responsible for carving and distributing some 300 feet of sand, gravel, clay and boulders throughout what is now Kosciusko County. The glaciers left hilly moraines and kettle holes which formed the many natural lakes in Northern Indiana. The lake comprises around 2.700 acres of water and 27 miles of shoreline and protective covers totaling 3,060 acres in all. Wawasee is the fifth largest lake statewide. Cedar Point, of glacial origins, was inhabitated by a type of Indian who lived around the time period of the birth of Christ. Their skeletal remains have been found with many interesting relics including moon-shaped beads that were buried with their dead. When the first homesteaders settled around the lake they referred to it as Turkey Lake. During the Civil War the lake was called “Nine Mile" and then shortly after that was named Lake Wawasee after the Miami Indian Chief Wau-wa-ausee, brother of Chief Pa-hed-ke-teh-a. which is translated “Flat Belly.” These brothers and their tribes
