Area parks invite people to relax in the sun

There are a number of parks in the Lakeland area which play hosts to residents and visitors alike (hiring the summer months. Here visitors enjoy picnics, cookouts, sunbathing, swimming, family reunions or just relaxing at the beach, playing frisbie and many other outdoor games. In the Lakeland area there are seven parks, five with beaches. Public beaches include Waubee Lakeside Park, near Milford and Lakeside Park in Syracuse. These parks provide clean, sandy beaches for summer fun. Another beach, also open to the public for swimming, is Hoy’s Landing on the east end of Henry Street in Syracuse. Private beaches include Oakwood Park and Kale Island, both on Lake Wawasee. Both Waubee Lakeside Park and Lakeside Park at Syracuse have lifeguards on duty during the major portion of the day when the weather is

right for swimming. Like most parks, the lifeguards are not on duty when the weather is cold or rainy. Other parks in the community are Railroad Park and Crosson Mill Park, both in Syracuse. Plans are underway for the development of two parks, one at the old fish hatchery site on Lake Wawasee and the other an 8* 2 acre tract of land located west of Calvary United Methodist Church in Wawasee Village. The latter tract of land was purchased town of Syracuse from Joe Hughes in March of 1976. Railroad Park, located on Medusa Street next to Front Street in Syracuse, has an area for boat launching into Syracuse Lake, along with playground equipment, restrooms and shaded areas. This park, along with Crosson Mill Park, offer excellent shorelines for fishing. Crosson Mill Park, located next to SR 13, provides fishing in Turkey Creek and has a cabin for family dinners.
