Augsburger named chairman State Senator John B. Augsburger (R-Syracuse) has been appointed to serve as chairman of the General Assembly’s interim study committee on local government by President Pro Tempore Robert D Garton tR-Columbus > Senator Augsburger stated that the committee will study city and town annexation procedures, the feasibility of merging local police and fire departments, and the need for legislation concerning the relationship between private employers and employees who must take time from work to perform duties as members of county govemmentbodies Augsburger further stated that the committee will also review all statutes which allow local special taxing districts to annex territory and levy taxes or fees on the residents of that territory' He added that they will determinewhether residents of annexed territory are adequately represented on appropriate governing bodies, whether services provided to those residents are adequate, and whethe. the taxation or levying of fees is fair and equitable This committee is one of 11 newly-created committees established by action of the Legislative Council at its meeting on March 11. 1982 The committees are required to meet during the legislative interim period and report their findings and recommendations to the General Assembly for the 1983 session Augsburger noted that the first organizational meeting of the committee will be held shortly, and hearings are expected to get underway during the summer months Stereo sty stem stolen from auto Ellen Irene Williams, Leesburg, reported a stereo system was stolen from her auto sometime between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 7 30 a m Saturday. Syracuse woman is bitten by dog Clara Vanderford, 65, r 2 Syracuse, is a patient at the Goshen Hospital where she is being treated for a dog bite wound above her left ankle bone and a broken knee cap, following an incident Thursday evening. May 20. Kosciusko County Humane Officer Jeff Gibbs reported Mrs. Vanderford was walking quickly along a street when an unleashed dog came running from a house and bit her. Mrs. Vanderford dropped to her knee and broke her knee cap. The dog, owned by Shirley Goodspeed, r 2 Syracuse, is being confined by the owner for the next 10 days. Gibbs said the owner of a dog without tags can be fined up to SSOO and the owner of a canine running at-large could receive a SSOO fine. Likewise, an owner harboring a nonimmunized dog six months or older could receive up to a S6OO fine and up to a SI,OOO fine plus up to 180 days in jail if a personal injury is involved.
