DRAMA AWARDS — Members of the Wawasee High School Drama Club and those who participated in the musical and drama presentations at Wawasee High School this past school year were presented with awards on Thursday evening. May 20. at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The awards were presented by David Blackwell. Steve Bailey and Alan Zurcher who was assisted by his daughter. Abby. five years old. The evening is a social evening for the three eighth grades to get together and become familiar with the new facilities and with each other. Freshman welcome at Wawasee Friday
Approximately 160 eighth graders have signed up for the Freshman Welcome being planned for Friday, May 28, at Wawasee High School The welcome party will be from 7 to 10.30 pm The evening will begin with a brief welcome to the eighth graders from Milford. North Webster and Syracuse who will be treated to an evening of fun arid friends The idea was spearheaded by Mr. and Mrs Doug Schmahi, Syracuse, who were prompted by concern that nothing special wak done for the eighth graders as they make the big move from junior high to high school Others helping are Mr and Mrs Robert Brooks. Mr and Mrs Richard McDaniel and Mr and Mrs Ron Smith, all of Milford; Mr and Mrs Michael Eastman. Mr and Mrs Dave Carey and Mr and Mrs Terry Enright, all of North Webster, and Mr and Mrs James .Alford. Mr and Mrs Keith Huffman and Mr and Mrs Hal Traviolia. all of Syracuse The purpose was to plan a Spring recital at 7:30 tonight students of Ila R Geyer will present their spring recital on Wednesday. social evening so that the three eighth grades can get together for the first time as the Wawasee High School Class of 1986 Students will become familiar with the new; facilities, play volleyball and ping pong, have relay races and eat at the school cafeteria The last hour of the evening will be a dance in the gy m or ping pong It will be a closed evening and once in. no one will be able to leave until 10:30 or until a parent arrives There will be ample supervision and a minimum of spending money is needed The goals of the committee are to generate enthusiasm for the move to Wawasee High School and encourage a favorable first impression, to provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the facilities, to break down community boundaries and encourage new friendships for both students and parents and to promote school pride and class spirit Mrs Schmahi stated the committee received the support and cooperation of the three junior high principals along with Dr. Howard Hull. YOUTH CENTER CHEERLEADING CLASS — Lakeland Youth Center, an United Way agency, cheerleading class has proven to be very enjoyable and helpful to the participating students. The class is for fourth to eighth graders and teaches self confidence, the basic movements of cheerleading, how to put a routine together, how to project yourself to others and many of the ideas that make a cheerleader successful. The above photo show members of the class working on their routines and enjoying the beautiful day outside. This is one of the many spring classes that have just finished at the Youth Center. Many new summer activities will be starting in June.
Kiwanis club inspects bikes Members of the Milford Kiwanis Club under the direction of Bob Groves, chairman; and committee members Fred Walls, Ray Sorensen and Preston Rigterink, inspected bicycles at the Milford Elementary and Junior High Schools last Wednesday. Between 125 and 150 bicycles were inspected. Club president John Replogle said a number of reflectors were added to bikes, minor repairs were made and suggestions were given to the youngsters. Each student participating received a bike certificate and a certificate for a coke from the Upper Crust. Dave Roberts student body president Dave Roberts was elected student body president at Wawasee High School on Tuesday with Bill Dixon elected vice president. Roberts and Dixon won over six other teams of candidates in an election which saw two ballots being taken before the winner was named Roberts and Dixon won in a run-off over Jay Glon and Sean Shanahan Others seeking the jobs of president and vice president of the WHS student body were Larry Flannery and Ron Schwartz. Erik Bartman and Paul Hardy, Scott Badskey and Bob Prado and Ron Martin and Greg Lawson Cheerleaders chosen Wawasee High School varsity cheerleaders for 1982-1983 were chosen Tuesday afternoon Those girls who will be cheering the Warriors on next year are Annette Bushong. Deanna Charlton. Krista Everts. Jenni Pattv. Donna Rich and Liz Waltz The junior varsity cheerleaders will be chosen this afternoon ( Wednesday). Cheerleaders named Milford Junior High School cheerleader try-outs were held recently and the cheerleaders were chosen for next year’s sporting events. Seventh grade cheerleaders will be. PANIC IN THE PALACE — David Stookey’s fifth grade reading students at North Webster Elementary School will be performing in a class play entitled. "Panic in the Palace.” this Thursday at 2 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Parents and friends are invited to attend this performance that promises to be real entertainment. Todd Beer to Air Force Academy Todd Beer, grandson of Mr. and Mrs, Theo Beer. Milford and a standout baseball player at North Wood High School, has been notified he has received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Cok). Beer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Beer. Nappanee. Air Force Coach Han Eagan and his basketball staff recruited Beer Beer is a six foot, two-inch swingman who averaged 18 points per game this past season. He was Northwoods leading scorer the past two seasons as the Panthers compiled a 32-11 record, the best two season records in the school's history North Wood was 18-4 this past season and 14-7 in 1980-1981 season Beer ranks fourth in the North Wood career scoring with 881 points He is the seventh all time leading rebounder with 249. third best in career assists with 178 and one of the most accurate field goal and free throw shooters ever in the school. He was named co-most valuable player at North Wood this past season and was named to the first team of the Northern Lakes Conference, the allElkhart County team and the allarea team

NORTH WEBSTER FISH FRY — Principal Richard Long of North Webster Elementary School is assisted by fifth grade students. Dawn Ruch and Pete Bonner, in preparing for the fish fry that will be held on Friday. May 28. 4:30-8:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria sponsored by the Parent. Teacher and Friends Organization. Tickets for Friday’s “all you can eat" fish fry may be purchased on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday. 8 a.m.-8:30 a.m. in the front foyer of the elementary school.
