Syracuse businessman dead, the result of trauma and heart attack

Donald C. (‘‘Pee Wee”) Niles, 56, 118 Medusa Court. Syracuse, was dead on arrival at 9:05 p.m Thursday, May 13. at Goshen Hospital. Niles had been bitten by a dog and suffered a heart attack enroute to the hospital for treatment. Niles, who had a fear of dogs, was going to a shed shortly before 8 p m at the home of Paul and Molly Hanna. 730*3 South Huntington St., Syracuse, which Niles owned The dog was a six-month old male English sheepdog who belongs to the Hannas and was familiar with Niles Syracuse Police Officer Wilham Selvey reported he was at the home of Fred Mick on Medusa Court at 7:50 p m when he was called to help Niles by Nancy Hicks, who reported a man was being bitten by a dog Selvey and Mick went to the house, where Niles and the dog. Bandit, were found Niles was on top of the dog. holding its mouth open with his hands Niles said he could not let go of the dog because the dogs rope was tangled around his waist and left leg It is believed the dog was playing with Niles, rather than attacking him Selvey cut the rope to release the dog and then retied the dog to its stake Niles had puncture wounds in both hands and went to his home, washed his hands and came back outside as The EMS arrived According to reports Niles attempted to go into a shed, before entering the ambulance, spoke to the dog and again his foot became tangled in the dog's rope He entered the ambulance unassisted, but collapsed and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9 05pm shortly after arriving

Well-Known Niles was born on March 1, 1926, near Syracuse to Melvin and Huldah (Johnson) Niles. On February 14.1947, be married the former Emmajean Neff in Mary Helen Miller Co-Owner Os Hill And Lake Nursery Mrs Hubert (Mary Helen) Miller, 76. of Roann and Syracuse. died unexpectedly Mondayevening. May 17, at 8:50 p.m. in Wabash County Hospital. She was co-owner of Hill and Lake Nursery at Roann and Syracuse with her husband She was born in Wabash County on December 30, 1905, to Marshall and Sara (Wray) Reed On July 7, 1943. she married Hubert MiUer in Sairit Louis. Mo He survives In addition to being co-owner of the nursery she had been a school teacher in Wabash and LaPorte Counties and Summitville Mrs Miller was a member of the Roann Christian Church and Indiana and American Association of Nurserymen Her husband is the only survivor A brother preceded her in death Friends may call after 2 p.m today (Wednesday) at the Grandstaff Funeral Home. Goshen Survivors include one daughter. Mrs. Richard (Kristie) Essig. Syracuse; one son, Randy. Syracuse; two grandchildren; two sisters. Mrs Ralph (Louise) Kiser. Richard Hardwick Assistant of Large Department Star* Richard O. Hardwick, 71, r 1 North Webster, died at 1:15 a m. Wednesday, May 12, in the Columbia City Nursing Home. He had been in failing health for more than a year and had enterted the nursing home Friday. May 7. He was born in Monroe, Adams County, on November. 6, 1910, to Clarence and Lula May (Rush) Hardwick. On November 24,1932, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Coats, who survives. Hardwick is a Ridgeville High School graduate and lived in Winchester. He lived in Connersville for 14 years before he purchased a grocery store in Ormas in 1947. In 1958 he closed the store and was employed at J. I. Case Co., and the Indiana State Highway Department. While at Winchester, he was assistant manger of the J. C. Penny Co. Dewart Lake, died at 2 p.m. Thursday. May 13, in the Woodland Nursing Home. Muncie. She had resided there for the past 4*3 years She was born on February 26. 1884. to John and Mary F. Life, of near Farmland. She had been a life-long resident of Randolph and Delaware Counties. Mrs Grove was a member of the Nazarene Church and her husband had been a Nazarene minister. In addition to her sister, other survivors include two daughters. Mrs. William Bell. Muncie and Mrs. Esther Boyle. Gaston; and several nieces and nephews Mrs. Boyle previously had a cottage at Big Barbee Lake. Funeral services were held Sunday. May 16, at 2 p.m. in the Meeks' Mortuary Muncie. Burial was in Hopewell cemetery north of Farmland

Marion C. Miller Buried In Arizona The following information concerning the death of Martin L. (“Doc”) Miller, Arizona, was received from his daughter following the publication of last week’s edition. Marion L. (“Doc”) Miller, Phoeniz, Ariz.. died on Saturday, May 8. while visiting his daughter Mrs. R. W. (Bonnie X Goodfellow. Simi Valley. Calif. He was born on August 20,1913, to Albert R. and Caroline Miller in New Paris. On February 24, 1945, he married Katherine (Betty) Wortinger, who survives. Miller had resided in Goshen until 1963 when he moved to Syracuse. In 1980 he retired from the car business after 40 years and moved to Phoenix. Ariz. He was a member of the Goshen Moose. During his years in auto sales he was associated with I.A. Miller, Goshen; and Cutter Chevrolet, Syracuse. In 1973 he became self-employed as owner of “Doc Milters” Syracuse Motor Sales. In addition to his wife and daughter, survivors include another daughter. Mrs Rodney (Pam) Smith. Phoeniz. Ariz.; five grandchildren and a brother. Max E. Milter. Warsaw Graveside services were conducted Wednesday. May 12. at 1:30 p.m. at Phoenix Memorial Park. Dr. William O. Smith officiated.

EMPLOYEE AWARD — Cindy Cline. Dewart Lake, was the first recipient of the Lakeland Loving Care Employee of the Quarter Award Monday. May 17. Mrs. Cline, a licensed practical nurse, was chosen by her fellow employees as one who goes beyond the call of duty. She has r been employeed at the nursing home for one year. An employee of the nursing home will be chosen at the end of year quarter and at the end of the year all these names will be combined to choose an employee of the year.
