ivmg as we do tn a free country, it is all too easy for us to lapse into a state of complacency, in which we cannot imagine being deprived of any of the freedoms which we enjoy every day and simply take for granted. We tend to forget that throughout the history of our nation they have often had to be paid for with the blood of our brave fighting forces who. their own lives barely underway, were called upon to defend our way of life and prevent it from being taken away from us. Let us all honor their memory by availing ourselves of these hard-won freedoms, which include attending our chosen House of Worship to thank God for them; and resolve to do our part in maintaining them and thereby making sure that all those lives that were given for us were not sacrificed in vain.

“Wherefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away: behold all things are become new. ” 1. Who wrote the above statement? 2. Os whom is it particularly descriptive?

Sometimes her students teach her

Mrs. Tom (Mary Ellen) Wineland of New Paris has served as Bethany Church of the Brethren’s Sunday School children’s superintendent for the past three years. Originally from west Goshen, Mrs. Wineland grew up near Foracre, moving to New Paris some years later when she married Tom. One of the duties that she likes most about her job is directing the Children’s Christmas Progam. “I get so caught up in it,” say Mary Ellen. Accorcting to her practices for this event are always “pure pandemonium.” In fact, she's said for the last three practices, “This is the last year I'm going to do this.” But somehow, someway, perhaps, just part of the magic of Christmas itself, the kids perform beautifully by Sunday. About this time she thinks. “I'm really proud. I shouldn’t have doubted them.” Mrs. Wineland also is in charge of ordering all the Sunday school materials and other materials, such as. the Bibles for graduates. She attends a monthly Christian Education meeting at the church as well as teaching the first and second grade Sunday School class. ' “They teach me things, sometimes.” says Mary Ellen, who says this age group can be very challenging at times. “At times you feel like you’re not getting through to them,” she says. Especially when we are in the Old Testament. One rather humorous story that best describes this happened not too long ago when the class was studying the Old Testament book of Jeremiah. After church one Sunday one of Mrs. Wineland’s students reportedly told her mother. “We learned about Jeremiah, today. Jeremiah was a bullfrog ' Somehow the little one had associated some previous information she had heard in a popular song about Jeremiah the bullfrog with the Biblical Jeremiah. "My kids love to paste.” says Mrs. Wineland referring to her i. Sunday School students. So she includes arts and crafts projects in her lessons that involve pasting. Paint got the youngsters, who were dressed in their Sunday best, in a lot of trouble, so. paints are now out. Sharing Tasks Mary Ellen and husband. Tom. are the parents of four children: Robert. 18. who graduated Sunday from Fairfield; Melody. 17, sophomore at Fairfield; Pam. 16. sophomore; and Scott. 14, who attends Fairfield Junior High. “It’s a lot of fun with all of them being so near the same age.” says their mother. Because of their closeness in age they are

describes her day at work as "never having a dull moment.” "The people are so nice to work with.” she says adding. "I really enjoy my job.” Her hobbies include gardening, food preservation, sewing, crewel work and ceramics. “Sometimes when I get a free moment to sit in the sun and work on my crewel work or embroider).
