MAY 17.1972 Plans came to light Tuesday night at the Syracuse town board of trustees meeting for a new high-rise apartment building to be constructed on the old South Shore Inn site on Lake Wawasee. Lewis Bagaloff, owner of the property where the apartment location is being considered, along with associate Donald Zejdel. requested permission of the Syracuse town board of trustees to tie into the town sewer system, adding that a water supply system would be no problem Mrs. Ralph Enoch of r 2 Syracuse, spent last week at Clemson, SC.. visiting her son Mr. and Mrs Jerald Peterson and son Approximately $l5O in damage was given by Syracuse firemen in a fire Tuesday night at 8:15 at the Cleo Singrey residence several doors north of the Frog, at Syracuse A hole in the chimney was blamed for the fire which started after a fire was lit in a free-standing fireplace at the residence Some paneling and rafters in the attic area were damaged Chad and Chris

The class is the largest which ever graduated from Syracuse High School. There were 28 members of this class. The Spink-Wawasee hotel and Sargent's hotel are preparing to be the answer to the B&O R.R. schedule's question: "Mystery Trip to ” this coming Saturday. Hundreds are expected to come to the lake. Miss Louise Hooper. Freshman. won the inter-class spelling contest held at the High school last Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon. Wallace Baughter. A championship medal was to be awarded to Louise Hooper and the class championship medal was to be awarded the last speller eliminated from each class’s team, on the last day of school. With the snowplows put away, the United States Postal Service is urging all postal patrons, especially those on rural routes, city curblines and highways, to turn their attention to repairing and improving their mailboxes during Mailbox Improvement week. However, the firemen were not needed as a garden hose was used to extinguish the fire before the firemen arrived. The call was received at approximately 7:40 am.

TRUMAN SCHOLAR — Linda Nice, daughter of Marjorie and Stanley Nice of Warsaw, will return to Anderson College this fall to begin her junior year with $5,000 to help with tuition, room, board and books, as a result of being one of 105 Truman Scholars in the United States. In the next four years, she will receive up to a total of $20,000. leading toward a career in public service. Linda Nice is Truman Scholar
Anderson College junior Linda Nice has been selected as one of the this country’s 105 Truman Scholars for 1982. Miss Nice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley (Marjorie) Nice, r 1 box 2 Warsaw, will receive up to $20,000 over a four-year period to further her education. The 1980 Warsaw Community High School graduate was honored at a special awards ceremony held at the Truman Library, Independence. Mo., on Saturday, May 9. Accompanied by her parents, she received the scholarship from Margaret (Truman) Daniel, daughter of the 33rd President of the United States The scholarships were set by the U.S. Congress as a living memorial to the late President, who had a lifelong interest in education The Warsaw resident was among the 43 women and 62 men receiving the scholarship, which provides an annual maximum award of up to $5,000 a year for four years of college and graduate school. As provided in the Congressional Act. one Truman Scholar is selected from each of the states, the District of Columbia. Puerto Rico and. considered as a single entity.
Guam, the Virgin Islands. American Samoa and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Miss Nice was named by the Foundation's board of trustees after an intensive national selection program was initiated on college campuses last fall. Nominated by her college, she then went through a lengthy applications process, from which the semi-finalists' were chosen. She was interviewed in person in Chicago on March 5 and was notified on April 9 that she was the scholarship winner from the state of Indiana. In addition, in order to make the fullest use of available reserve, the board of trustees authorized each of the 13 regional review panels to recommend four additional scholars for consideration large.” and the board confirmed 52 additional recommendations at its meeting on April 5. During the awards ceremony, former Secretary of the Treasury in the Truman Administration. John W. Snyder, who serves as the chairman of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, delivered the welcoming address to those gathered. The keynote speaker. Charles F. Brannan, former Secretary of Agriculture during the Truman years, was introduced by Dr. Elmer B. Staats. former comptroller General of the United States and president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation. Brannan spoke to the scholars, calling on them to continue the development of their plans for careers in public service. He assured them, based on his years in government that public service is a rewarding and gratifying way of life and urged them to follow Truman's example of always doing one's best. Miss Nice, who is pursuing a double major in American studies and psychology pre-law, plans to attend law school following her undergraduate work. 1 She is considering, attending either Georgetown University, the University of Virginia or the University of Michigan to study law. Passing accident A 1982 Datsun driven by Michael B. Baker. 29, r 2 Syracuse, struck an auto driven by Ellsward US 6 and CR 9 in Elkhart County Tuesday evening. May 11. at 5:15 p.m. According to Elkhart County Police the Baker auto collided with Yoder's 1979 Ford Fairmont as Yoder was attempting a left turn Baker was attempting to pass at the time of the accident. A third vehicle blocked Baker's view of the turning auto. Investigating the accident was Sheriff’s Ptl. Randy Cripe. No one was hurt and the damage was not extensive.
