Pythians hold practice, attend Elkhart convention

North Webster Pythian Sisters met May 10 and a special staff practice was held for the May 13 convention at Elkhart. A report was given pertaining to the funds raised by serving lunch at Catherine Bause s sale. Transportation for the trip to Elkhart was arranged. Refreshments were served by Joan Moore, Alroma Green and Mrs Bause Convention Many dignitaries from throughout the state were present at the May 13 Elkhart convention Dorothy Cunningham, district deputy grand chief of the Elkhart Temple, was in charge of the business session. Clover Paxton, Warsaw, served as master of ceremonies The Warsaw Temple conducted the introductory service The welcome was given by Sue Weldy. most excellent chief of Elkhart. The response was given by Ermal Vanator of the North Webster Temple Elkhart temple members were in charge of the ritualistic opening and balloting A report was given concerning the Sunshine Girls Delegate reports were given and the North Webster Temple extended an invitation for the 1983 District convention to be held at North Webster Temple Mothers and 50 year members were recognized Greetings were offered from grand officers, past grand officers and district deputies A song session was led by the Elkhart Temple A noon luncheon was served at Albright Methodist Church. Transportation to and from the convention center was provided by a church bus and private cars Messages of evaluation were given by Florabelle Etchison. Prankfort Initiation was conducted by district officers who were assisted by the North Webster Temple 1 staff The afternoon program was

The opening prayer was led by Marian Steedman Sue Jennings reported on the summer golf lessons It was noted that the beginning bridge class has met three times Hilda Stone announced that a picnic is' planned for July 10 at Syracuse Park A tnp to Shipshewana and dinner out is scheduled for June 15 The final bowling report was given by Sandy Sawyer. On June 24 a theatre party is planned The ladies will see "Fiddler On The Roof.” Ed Shaffer from Syracuse was guest speaker He gave a program on lawn care and gardening The program was followed by a question and answer session. Refreshments were served by Mrs Steedman This was the group s last regularly scheduled meeting until September.

The check represents proceeds from the sorority sponsored concert held in February. Foreign foods served to Sechrist 65s

Norma Boyer was hostess for the May 13 meeting of Sechrist Sixty Five Extension Homemakers Club The dinner meeting was highlighted by a lesson on. "International Cooking" conducted by Mrs Boyer. Foods representative of foreign countries were served. Guests prepared their own main dishes which were then cooked by the hostess A "Thank You Prayer” was led by Mrs. Boyer. Lynn Atwood reported on Projects discussed by Psi lota Xi Some of the projects supported by Theta Sigma Chapter of Psi lota Xi Sorority were discussed on May 11 when members met at the home of Betty Richcreek I'he projects were Lakeland Special Olympics. Lakeland Youth Center. North Webster Youth League, North Webster Charity Fund and Wawasee High School Music Department The 19 ladies present voted to make a donation toward the salary of a deaf educator for the Cochlear Implant Surgery Team. The first such surgery will be performed in July on a child at Riley Children’s Hospital. Indianapolis The surgeryrestores some level of hearing to completely deaf persons and the educator will assist in this recovery It was announced that there were 2.200 geraniums sold before Mother's Day and the annual bazaar is schAiuled for next fall Plans were discussed for scholarships to be awarded to two seniors on awards day at Wawasee High School Karen Parr will be hostess for the June 8 meeting New members will be initiated. VBS Set for June Bible School starts at North Webster United Methodist Church on June 7 and runs till June 11 It is open to youngsters 3 years of age through sixth grade. Theme for this year is "We Work With God.” Sessions will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11 30 a m each day. There will be games, songs, crafts. Bible study * and refreshments. An Agape Feast is planned for the last day. Those wishing to attend may register now at the church office. Bible School directors are Carol Wagoner and ShirleyPresley. Senior Citizens honor mothers All mothers present at the May--12 meeting of North Webster Senior Citizens were honored and presented with an Impatiens plant The plants were provided by North Webster Lady Lions A "Spring Housecleaning’ theme prevailed during the event which was held at North Webster Church of God. There were 53 adults and three children present. Entertainment was provided by Marv Jo Lundy at the piano and Louis Firestone who play ed the guitar and mouth organ. 8 pointed star block is lesson Carol Clark taught a two and one half hour lesson on how to piece an eight pointed star block when members of Lakeland Quilting Club met May 10 at the home of Miriam Mason. Mrs. Clark modeled her finished vest made in the strippiece quilting method. It was done in plain and printed fabrics in shades of blue and burgandy. She also displayed a round, quilted and appliqued Bible scene in a wooden hoop frame. Ruth Hughes was a guest. The dates of numerous quilt shows and auctions were announced including: The fifth annual Church World Service Friendship Quilt Auction to be held at the Elkhart County Fair Grounds and the quilt show on June 10. 11 and 12. at Coopers in Mentone It is being held in conjunction with the Mentone Centennial. Mrs Mason will be hostess for the next meeting. Members will be finishing all quilting projects for the year

TOP HONORS - Ute morning kindergarten class of Susie Heath. North Webster Elementary School, walked off with top honors, as a group, in the recent PTFO sponsored fund raiser. The youngsters sold 237 spices and the class will receive $25. Mrs. Rowe's class will also receive $25 for selling 230 spices.

To meet May 26 — Contracts are still unsigned

A major topic of discussion when the North Webster Town Board held its regular meeting May 12 was the need to set a joint meeting with the township advisory board to discuss contracts. Signing of fire and EMS contracts by the town board was delayed until after their joint meeting with the township board and the trustee. Dick Mitchell The boards will meet May 26 to discuss the dispatching contracts and other matters. Executive session will begin at 7 p m and the meeting will be opened to the public at 8:30 p.m.. Sugar N' Spice meet at Hollars Devotions were given by Nancy Vanator on May 11 when members of Sugar N* Spice 81 Club met at the home of Jane" Hollar. Linda Doll assisted Mrs. Hollar. The topic of Mrs Vanator s devotions was “Make Your Home In the Land and Bring Peace." The meeting was opened byMrs Doll She led as everyone repeated the club prayer, creed and pledge to the American flag Roll call response was. Both bids were taken under advisement by the board They will study available funds, street conditions and traffic flow before making a decision on what streets to repair Also submitted by both companies were bids to do some streets in chip and seal as an alternative to paving Some decision may be reached at the Webster Scouts to Chicago North Webster Girl Scout Troup Number 22 recently took a charter bus from North Wester to Elkhart to join four other buses for a site seeing boat trip through Chicago They visited a museum, a Potowatomi Indian house; The Shedd Aquairum. where they watched a diver feed the fish; and carried a sack lunch to enjoy together On the return trip they stopped in Hammond for supper Girls on the trip were JodyElliott. Jay Havenstine. told Marshal Charles Parker about a truck with an expired license plate, which Parker said he would look after. He also commented that he believed the marshal should be in full uniform when on duty. Parker replied that he was presently short of summer uniforms. The police and sewage reports were read, as well as correspondence from Condor Cable Television Company, stating that plans were moving forward Another citizen. Bob Breyer, told the board he would be unable to attend the joint meeting on May 26 and wanted to make some comments. township advisory board meeting on May 11. An ordinance to control vendors in the town, especially during Mermaid Festival, had. been drawn up at the request of the board by attorney Tim Blue. After discussion by the board and questions from the public it was decided that Attorney Blue be asked to research the ordinance further and clarify some points. The SPEEDY program, which will provide the town with student workers June 7 through August 5. was discussed and president Bemish told Marshal Parker that a work schedule should be made for this summer help and kept for the town records. Clark Davis, who lives near the cemetery, complained of constant burning of trash and leaves in his neighborhood Marshal Parker said he would check into the problem.
