Pike survey underway by DNR at Waubee Lake
• Fishermen hoping to land a northern pike this summer have a good chance to do so at Waubee Lake, a small lake near Milford How many fishermen do just that is the focus of a fishery survey being conducted this year by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Smith tied for 3rd in wins Bryan Smith, son of Mn and Mrs. Henry Smith. Syracuse, and a senior at Notre Dame, has moved himself into a tie spot for third place on the all-time single season win list at Notre Dame Smith is a pitcher for the Irish baseball team and has notched seven wins against two losses in over 60 innings of action Smith moved into the tie by downing the Illinois-Chicago Circle on Sunday. Thornburg Drugs co-sponsoring 4th annual Michiana Lung Run
Thornburg Drugs. Syracuse, announce they haw entry blanks for the Fourth Annual Michiana Lung Run Saturday. June 5. at 8 am. at South Bend's Pinhook Park The five and 15 kilometer footraces, five kilometer fitness walk and 15 kilometer corporate cup competition being spon sored by the American Lung Association of North Central Indiana, a South Bend newspaper and participating area phar macies The race is open to all persons of any age There is an entry fee
According to Jed Pearson, DNR fisheries biologist, northern pike are abundant in Waubee Lake, a result of a co-operative pike stocking program between the DNR and the Waubee Lake Property Owners Association Since 1979 approximately 2,000 pike fingerlings have been released Plans are to continue stocking if ample pike are caught to justify the program’s cost A creel clerk will periodically interview fishermen at Waubee to obtain information on fish sought, fish harvested and fish size Os particular interest is the combination of stocked pike to the catch Pearson said stocked pike can be distinguished from native pike by examining the fish's fins All stocked pike had a ventral fin removed before being released into the lake "If stocked pike make up a large percentage of the pike harvest and many fishermen try their luck at catching pike, another pike stocking could be made as early as next fall.
