Sewers, dogs, space needs study topics for Syracuse town board
The main topics discussed at the meeting of the Syracuse Town Board meeting Tuesday, April 20, were a space needs study, another proposal by North Shore Estates regarding sewer hookup, spring clean up day and the water main at Dana which has been repaired A representative of North Shore Estates presented an alternative proposal to the board, whereby North Shore Estates would pay the town SIO,OOO for exchange to hook on to the sewage system, allowing the town to put the funds to use as it saw fit in repairing the existing system for the benefit of the town. North Shore Estates would put in their lines al their expense they said After discussion by the board a motion was made by Morganthaler to take the proposal under advisement The motion earned and Myrick said the board would have an answer at the next meeting regarding the proposal Dog Problem Mrs Floyd Reed. West North Street, Syracuse, spoke to the board about the problem of dogs running loose in town President Myrick stated he had talked with Police Chief Bob Houser about the problem and that in the next few days he would have a round-up to try to get rid of the problem The board decided it should run an advertisement in the newspapers to warn dog owners to keep their pets at home A representative from Leary Construction. Greenfield, presented their invoices for repair work they have completed on the water tower He was told tfiat the board would bnng up the bill at their next regular meeting Reports Department heads gave their reports to the board The fire department is to have a meeting with the EMS Apnl 21 to start negotiations on a new contract In further fire department business, it was decided that second notices would now be sent to persons still active in the alarm system Joe Dock told the board that Stremmel and Hi 11 are ready to proceed with the automatic booster pump system for the water tower now that the repairs have been made Mynck said that the park board had asked him to tell the town board that May 1 is the day set aside as clean-up day for the park

Michigan man arrested
for Joseph Divine murder
Danny James Cox, 23, Niles, Mich., was arrested Wednesday afternoon. April 14. and charged with the murder in the shooting death of Joseph Devine March 5, 1981, at Devine Oil Co., in NewParis. Cox waived extradition from s Niles and was taken to the Elkhart County Jail Thursday afternoon. April 15. Cox was racked up after the sealed indictment from the Elkhart Circuit Court grand jury was given to Judge Gene Duffin The grand jury heard less than four hours of testimony before reaching a decision.

A. L. Long, North Webster killed in Goshen Tuesday
Arthur E (' Shorty”) Long, Jr . 64. r 2 box 95 North Webster, died at 4.50 p m Tuesday. April 20, at Goshen Hospital from chest injuries received in an accident at 3:42 p m at the intersecton of West Pike St, and North Main Street in Goshen. Long was a director of the Tippecanoe Lake Property Owners Association According to Goshen City Police, Long was eastbound on West Pike St when his Datsun King Cab pickup truck struck the rear end of a semi-tractor trailer for no apparent reason Thesemi tractor trailer was stopped for traffic at the intersection The trailer was a car-carrier. Police stated the taillights were in working order on the car carrier and the brakes on the pick up were also properly working There was no attempt to stop Driver of. the semi-rig was McArthur Perkins. 29. Albion, Mich He told police he was stopped at the intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before making a left turn onto Main Street when the accident occurred.

Devine's murder was linked by officials to the theft of half a million dollars worth of gasoline from a bulk storage facility in South Bend between 1979 and 1981. Citation for Milford 'Year' citizens (EDITOR’S NOTE: A full account of the lives of public service of Ralph Neff and Priscilla Myers. Milford's 1982 "Co-Citizens of the Year." as rood Saturday night by Karl Keiper. follows.) Ralph Neff Ralph was born in Milford on May 25, 1899 — Ralph will be 83 years old this coming May. His parents were OrVille and Cora Neff, who lived northwest of Milford. Ralph married Grace Pinkerton on June 28, 1919 — Ralph and Grace were married for 61 years. Grace passed away on June 10, 1980. Sometime during those 61 years, they had two lovely daughters — Mrs. Don (Emmajean) Niles, 118 Medusa Ct., Syracuse, and Mrs. Ralph (May Darlene) Hawkins, 801 W. Walnut St., Nappanee. Since that time Ralph has been blessed with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ralph is an elder in the Milford Christian Church. He taught Sunday school for many years and is still very active in church work. - Ralph has lived on the south side of Waubee Lake most of his years. His occupation was farming. In addition, Ralph has a record of 48 years as a Milford school bus driver. Ralph hauled many a Milford basketball team on his bus — basketball remains one of Ralph’s big interests. Ralph began his career as a school bus driver when he had to use a horse and buggy to transport the students. After farming and 48 years transporting students. Ralph retired. Did I say Ralph retired? Ralph just stopped farming and driving school bus. He now works at the Big Boulder golf course in the summertime and does volunteer work at the Loving Care Nursing Home. At the present time he donates about eight hours per day. five days per week at the nursing home pushing wheel chairs, delivering mail, passing out juice and giving good cheer to all the residents. If someone is taken to the hospital, he calls on them The men of the nursing home admire him and the women dearly love their Ralph! Many of the residents are younger than Ralph. We admire a man like Ralph and this is why, Ralph, you are our Citizen of the Year Priscilla Myers Priscilla was born on November 20.1900. Priscilla has been a part of the Milford community most of her life, the daughter of Jacob and Lena Hartter. She is one of 10 children - 6 sisters, Gladys Coy, Leona Seely, Lillian Crafton. Hilda Miller. Magdalene Kern and Kathryn Price and three brothers. George Hartter. Alvin Hartter and John Hartter. Alvin and John are deceased Priscilla was married to the late Cletus Myers and has one son, Charles (Chuck) Myers. She also has two grandchildren. Christy and Sherry. She owned and operated a beauty shop 18 years and helped many a beautician get started in the business. She was very helpful in her husband’s car business, serving coffee and doughnuts during their showings and decorating the front window of the garage Priscilla has long been recognized, not only in the Milford area, but all over the state for her decorating abilities. She has decorated for many years, the car of “Miss Milford’’ in the Queen of Lakes parade at North Webster She has helped many girls in the Kosciusko County Fair contests She also helped with the make-up and costumes for the class plays in Milford. For many years she has been responsible for the floral arrangements in the Christian Church, has helped the making of the floats used by the church on Memorial Day. and for many years she has been in charge of decorating the fellowship room for all occasions — all of these things have not gone unnoticed by all those who have had the pleasure of being at these functions. Priscilla has been active in the Order of Eastern Star, Soros is. Columbia Reading Circle. Legion Auxiliary and her bridge club. About five evenings a week. Priscilla can be found at the Loving Care Nursing Home, not
as a resident, after all she is only 81, but giving of her time and talents to those who greatly appreciate her efforts and talents. Her’s is truly a labor of love — Priscilla, we love you and salute you — Milford Citizen of the Year. Awards Night for Milford Scout troop A presentation of special awards to members of Milford Boy Scout Troop 747 provided a focal point of the Milford Lion’s Club’s Monday night meeting at the community building. Scoutmaster John Rouch was present with assistants Terry G. Thompson, Ron Stricklin and Max Evans to present the following awards: Five-step Star award, personal fitness merit badge and senior patrol leader badge to Ricky Thompson; assistant senior patrol leader award to Carl Rouch; bear patrol leader award to Marc Evans; assistant bear patrol leader award to Albert Stricklin; jet patrol leader award to Clyde Amsden; assistant jet patrol award to Ricky Powell; and quartermaster award to Todd Wilson. Receiving first rank patches were Todd Wilson. Terry Richardson. Mark Ray. Don Deeter. Marc Evans, Ricky Powell. Clyde Amsden. Jason Miller and Alex Lozano. The Lions Club has sponsored the Scout Troop for many years and has an annual awards night to honor the group. Gives Slide Presentation Fred Wall, associate pastor of the Christian Church of Milford, provided entertainment in the form of a color slide presentation and interesting narrative on a trip he took to Israel in 1979, showing many places and things with biblical significance. He was introduced by Lion D. G. Seely. The Lions are winding up their annual calendar sales, and member Bruce Lamb, in charge of the sales, is asking anyone who has not been contacted to call him at 658-9166 to have their family birthdates, anniversaries, etc., listed. Steve Miller and Jack Baker. 5 2,000 damage as cars collide On April 19 a two-car accident at the intersection of SR 13 and Huntington Street caused approximately $2,000 damage to vehicles owned by Douglas L. Miller and Billie R. Gildersleeve. Miller, 24, 57936 CR 9 Elkhart, was traveling north on SR 13 and collided with the 1979 Oldsmobile driven by Gildersleeve, 43 , 400 Dolan Drive. Syracuse. .Miller said he drove his Toyota around the Gildersleeve vehicle on the left hand side and thought Gildersleeve had her right turn light flashing. Gildersleeve told Syracuse police that she was making a left hand turn and that she had her left turn light flashing. Miller was ticketed by police. Pinkertons entertain Waubee Grange 2365 met with Glen and Velma Pinkerton Monday evening, April 12. with Mrs. Pinkerton opening the meeting with all reciting the pledge to the American Flag and Grange salutations “In the Garden” was sung by the group as the opening song. The women’s chairman reported she received a thank you letter from the Fort Wayne State School for gifts sent there to the Grange's friend and the school’s secretary the past year.

April 26, in Fort Wayne, ratepayers of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company will have the opportunity to endorse or protest the utility’s proposal to increase its rates for both gas and electric service. Milford Pork Board discusses caretaker
The major part of the Milford Park Board meeting Tuesday evening. April 13, was spent discussing the caretakers contract. The caretakers contract is being revised and expanded to cover a broader range of responsibility. It was also decided to present the amended contract to the present caretaker for his consideration and also accept applications for the caretaker’s position from anyone who would wish to apply. Tlie applications may be picked up at the Milford Library between 12 and 5 p.m. daily or at Walters Drugs. Any applicant may call 658-4585 in the evening for more information. The for the caretaker are to live at the park as overseer and general maintenance. There could also be an occassional specific job required but not to be of major proportions. These duties will be mostly in the summer months and can be done on a part time basis In return for these services the park board will furnish free space for the caretaker’s trailer plus water and sewage hook ups Another postion that is open at the park is the position of proprietor of the concession stand at the beach. This could be worked in conjunction with the caretaker s position Only people of good moral character and with good references are requested to apply To Purchase Grills Other business items discussed were to purchase the chemicals and treat for sandburs around the beach and to purchase two permanent charcoal grills and install them in the picnic area The fill will be hauled in and leveled in the area around the old Scout Cabin when the ground becomes dry. intervenors will present technical evidence to the commission on Monday, May 10, at 9 a.m., local time, in the Great Hall of the Valparaiso Union Building, Valparaiso University. A special evening session at 6:30 p.m. will be held to allow ratepayers in the area to state their opinion. Again, it is not necessary to make prior arrangements to testify. NIPSCo is asking for a 15.7 per cent increase in electric rates and a 5.66 per cent increase in gas rates.

Option signed for center Father David Hyndman, chairman of the fund raising project for the new Lakeland Daycare Center, Syracuse, reported that the fund raising is coming along. The group in charge of the project signed an option on about one acre of land Friday, April 16. Presently the land belongs to Mary Pusti and is located south of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church and the Rotary Park field on SR io, north of Syracuse. The lot is on the east side of the road and is where the center proposes to locate its new facility. D Auto damaged Charles T. Pinnick, 28, Syracuse, reported to police his auto was kicked and dented by vandals recently. Police estimated the damage at $l5O to Pennick’s auto.
