Two fires in Syracuse
Syracuse firemen were called to two fires in the bad weather Monday, April 5. Both fires were extinguished and neither proved serious, but slick roads contributed to the problems. At 6:35 p.m. the firemen were Stahly loses control of auto, hits fence Max Stahly, 42. Syracuse, lost control of his auto on the wet pavement due to a bad tire and hit a fence Tuesday afternoon, March 30. The accident occurred at the corner of CR 1300 N and 175E near Milford at 2:37 p m Stahly was cited for driving with an expired license plate Damage was estimated up to SI,OOO to the auto and less than S2OO damage to the fence belonging- to Leon Tucker, r 1 Milford

called to the home of Delight Craig, r 2 Syracuse, near Planks’ Marina. A range in the home was on fire The firemen found a broken tube in the range where the fire was. After shutting off the gas and extinguishing the fire they advised Mrs. Craig that the tube should be fixed No damage estimate was set. Another fire, at 11:25 p.m . took firemen to the residence of Jim Thwaits, 313 South Huntington Street. Syracuse Hot coals from the fireplace had ignited trash in front of the home The fire was extinguished and no damage resulted. 10 YEARS AGO, APRIL 15.1972 Members of Syracuse Masonic Lodge No, 454. Free and Accepted Masons, burned the mortgage to their lodge in an informal ceremony at the lodge hall Monday night. Taking part in the mortgage burning were Larry Haviland. Jack Elam. J. Barton Cox. Noble C. Blocker. Everett O. Dunn. Deloss Weaver. Carl L. Myrick and Clair Mohler, present Worshipful Master of the lodge. The first new business in the uptown Syracuse area to open in a long time will have its official opening Friday morning, marked by a ribbon-cutting at 10 a m Grand opening will be Friday. Saturday and Sunday. The
business is the Palace of Sweets, located on the south side of West Main Street, and owned by Gene and Sheila Berghorn of North Webster. They opened their first Palace of Sweets in North Webster last summer. The business will feature ice cream products as a specialty, but will also serve pizza and a large assortment of sandwiches. 20 YEARS AGO, APRIL 5.1962 The gas war in a five-state area ended this morning (Thursday), motorists found as they pulled up to gas pumps. The war, which brought regular gas from 32.9 to 24.9 has been in effect in the Milford-Leesburg-North Webster area since March 10.
Bonnie’s Dixie Restaurant, located at the corner of Main and Huntington Streets in downtown Syracuse, is planning an open house Saturday and Sunday. April 14 and 15, featuring the restaurant's new Redwood Room. Bonnie Workman, who has owned the popular restaurant since January 10. of this year, leased the corner room recently and has had it completelyremodeled for a dining room. Jay P. Peffley is the new Northern Indiana Public Service Co. representative at Syracuse, replacing Noble D. Myers, who has held that post since May 1, 1931. Mr. Peffley took over his new job Monday morning. Prior to that he has been an engineer
witn the company since April 10, 1939. The Peffley’s hope to move to Syracuse as soon as they can find a suitable home. They have two daughters, Cheryl and Marcia. 30 YEARS AGO, APRIL 4. 1952 One of the community’s most valuable assets in recent years in the way of employment of local people, has been the Syracuse Rubber Products Company. The local company was formed in December. 1944, and first started business here in the Sinclair Oil Station, which was vacant at that time. Elmo Niccum, Bill Johnson. Charles Snyder, and Paul Lantz, all of Goshen, came here to start the rubber company.

Pettit has accepted the call to the Grace Lutheran Churches of Syracuse. Nappanee and Cromwell. He will graduate from the Mayfield 111. Seminary. May 4. His mother and father will move here to make his home for him here in Syracuse. One of the greatest revivals held in a local church in the community for several years closed Tuesday evening in the Church of the Brethren. The meetings began on Easter Sunday and was conducted by the pastor. Rev. Jarboe. assisted by local talent. On his way to school one morning last week. Spencer Heerman found a woman's dress on the sidewalk near the post office and gave it to Mrs. Forest Snepp. who posted a card that the owner could have same by South Bend man sentenced for picking marijuana Loren Earl Wilkins, 35. South Bend, received a two-year sentence for possesion of more than 30 grams of marijuana, a class D felony, in Kosciusko County Superior Court Thursday, April 1. Wilkins and his sister-in-law. Debra Lynn Bailey. 19. were arrested and charged September 21. 1981, after allegedly picking marijuana near Milford. Wilkins' attorney asked Judge Robert Burner to sentence him on a class A misdemeanor charge, saying the defendant had never commited any serious crimes. However. Judge Bruner decided not to use his option in reducing the charge noting in a presentencing report which stated Wilkins had frequently blamed his problems on other people. Wilkins received 192 days credit for days already served in the county jail and may. have his sentence extended since the conviction comes while he was on parole for another crime. Declines treatment for injuries after following accident ( Eva L. Godshalk. 73, r 5 Syracuse, sustained a broken nose and facial injuries in a twocar accident Thursday afternoon April 1, on 13 14 miles north of North Webster. She declined treatment for her injuries. The Godshalk auto and a jeep driven by Randy L. Sindelar. 23. r 1 North Webster, collided when Mrs Godshalk attempted a left turn at the same time Sindelar was trying to pass. The Godshalk auto was struck in the driver’s side and knocked into a utility pole County Patrolman Richard Monk investigated the accident Damage estimates were not available. Cited for reckless driving after mishap Jeffrey Kindle, 25. r 2 Leesburg, was cited for reckless driving after his car slid on the pavement and struck a utility pole and bam at CR 700 N and Harper Road. The accident occurred on Saturday, April 3, at 11:25pm. Damage was estimated up to $2,500 to Kindle’s auto.

Receives ticket after accident Edward Bontrager, 46. 71674 CR 133 Syracuse, was cited for failure to yield the right of wayfollowing a two-car accident in Goshen Thursday. April 1, at 8:40 am. Bontrager was westbound on Madison Street and attempted a left turn onto Sixth Street w-hen his 1977 Ford Explorer pickup truck collided with an eastbound 1975 Ford Elite driven by Alice S. Ruff. 44. 1329 Goldstein Drive. Goshen. Following the impact Bontrager’s truck almost struck a Goshen police car operated by Capt. Earle Waltz, Jr. Capt. Waltz set the damage at more than S4OO. Syracuse men arrested on three warrants Three Syracuse men were arrested on different warrants and booked in the Kosciusko County Jail recently. Max Stanley Stahly, 42, 301 East Boston St., Syracuse, was booked on a body attachment warrant from Kosciusko Circuit Court involving a reciprocal support case. , Ernest Clifton Poole, 63. r 4 Syracuse, was booked on a county court warrant for conversion. He was released on his own recognizance. Poole is charged with shoplifting two packages of M & M candies, valued at $3.98, from Augsburger’s Super-Valu. Syracuse. James Robert Cline. 24. Syracuse, was arrested on a bench warrant from countycourt. Leesburg man threatens suicide Lee Ratliff. 27, Prairie St.. Leesburg, was talked into putting down a loaded gun and coming out of a Leesburg house more than three hours after Kosciusko County and Indiana State Police began negotiations Wednesday. March 31. Ratliff had barricaded himself inside a home and threatened suicide. County Police Lt. Rich Mikel responded to a call at 11:20 a m that a man was going to commit suicide. The man had reportedlybeen released recently from a hospital after attempting suicide Police said Ratliff stuck four knives in the front door, preventing entry into the home, and then held a gun in his mouth during the entire time Leesburg Fire Department members were called to take a ladder to the home when it appeared police could not convice Ratliff to come out. He finally left the home at 2:40 p.m. only after his wife had come to the residence and talked with him. Ratliff, a resident of Wabash County, had been staying in Leesburg at the home oPhis father.
