By Pete Frttdkle WASHINGTON. D. C -- The Los Angeles Dodgers, owned by Walter O’Malley, don't plunk out stupid sums erf money to greedy baseball players. Yet they are world champions. That says something. f Nor did the Dodgers change their act for Fernando Valenzuela, their former holdout upstart from Mexico-who wanted to hold them up. And good for them. One of the things that’s turning veteran fans off from baseball--so far television is compensating-is the attitude of so many twenty-vear-olds about their pay. They want the moon and don’t propose to offer any guarantees that they will perform at peak efficiency each year in a multi-year contract. But they want pay guaranteed. Fans earning fifteen, twenty , twenty-five or thirtyfive thousand dollars a vear.

Gymnasts ousted in tough regional

“I was pleased. We made the team average and I was pleased with the overall performance of the girls. It was some of their best routines.” commented Kim Conrad about the Valparaiso Regionals, Friday, March 26. Wawasee girls' gymnastics team failed to qualify at the regional. Winning the regional and qualifying for state in team competition was Merrillville who dethroned the defending state champion Valparaiso 104.55 to 102 65. These two teams also dominated the meet as well as several other schools from the northwest section of the state. Wawasee received a total of 85 3 points in team competition. In addition to Wawasee there were no other individuals from the Wawasee sectional place in the top four in any events The state tournament will be on Friday, April 3. at Perry Meridian High School, Indianapolis. Kim Conrad, gymnastic coach, had predicted earlier that the regional would be tough "The regional has one of the toughest teams competing and is one of the best in the state." Wawasee had advanced to the regional with an easy sectional victory over Elkhart Memorial. Elkhart Central. Concord. Plymouth. North Wood. Jimtown. Tippecanoe Valley None of the Wawasee girls, or individuals from the other nearby schools placed in the top four of any events. Results Optional vault — NancyHow ard. Scorers in recent years have covered up for the players in this era. Players have also become much more pampered, and sit out games, often with only the slightest of physical disabilities.
