Lions to pick up litter on Saturday
Each spring for the past few years, volunteers from more than 400 Lions Clubs around the state have given up one Saturday of their time to help pick up litter along the highway roadsides, litter and trash that has accumulated over the w inter Those volunteers will be out oh the roads again this coming Saturday, April 3. and motorists are cautioned to be on the lookout for them and to exert special driving caution when they spot a group of workers These volunteers will be walking along the highways and interstates beginning early Saturday morning, and in some cases, may have a slow-moving vehicle as an escort They may also be dressed in bright, visible colors, with some wearing safety vests, but drivers are urged to be especially watchful when they see these folks who are helping out. says Indiana Department of Highways Director Gene K Hallock Proclamation In honor of the Lions' contribution. Governor Robert D Orr has issued a proclamation commending the Lions for their civic-minded efforts and declaring April 3 as Lions Litter Pickup Day. Lions Club litter drive chairmen say they may have some additional help on the drive this year from other service groups and youth groups and they have chosen April 10 as a rain date In some areas of the state, certain clubs also may work alternate dates if they are unable to schedule their volunteer time on the designated (late of April 3. Helps State Hallock explains that these Lions volunteers have been helping out his department, and. in turn, all citizens of the state, since 1979 by devoting time each spring to help the states Department of Highways, with litter pickup. Their donated time could free up as many as 50.000 working hours of labor that highway crews would have had to Volunteers needed for Scout Cabin The Syracuse Scout Cabin is used weekly by more than 100 Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, the Syracuse Boy Scout Troop 728 and is the site of the Real Services which provide hot meals for our senior citizens. Due to increases in utilities, the budget for repairs to the cabin is nearly , nonexistent. Many of the people who use the cabin are unable to do the needed repairs themselves and the need for donated time to perform thest repairs is urgent This winter some of the Scouts' fathers did repairs, however, many still remain and a list of persons to call for minor repairs, as they occur, is needed A leaking seal in the bathroom needs fixing, as well as tables that won't stand up and a problem with the gas heater. FI oures cent lights are needed in the large room of the cabin to save energy and brighten the area for the troops that meet in this room when two troops meet the same evening. Anyone who can donate any time please contact Mrs. Leonard Kline, service unit chairman of the Syracuse Girl Scouts, at 4574658.
spend on litter pickup before the spring mowing season begins. This volunteer help could save the state as much as $250,000. Hallock notes. The donated time also helps out by freeing up working hours at this time of the year when crews are spending time on other muchneeded tasks such as highway pavement patching and repair Planned litter pickup work by the highway's own crews has been cut back this year, as it has in several recent years past, so the Lions' volunteer help is especially meaningful and increasingly important as funds
