History of lenten observances given
A number of Lenten observances have found their ways into our modern life, either through customs or. language. Here are a few observances and their origins as sent in by June Laudeman of Syracuse. Mrs. Laudeman has had another article accepted for publication in the Upper Room and the item will be printed in the January 1983 issue. Carnival — The term “carnival" originated during early pre-Lenten observances as a season c r easting and rejoicing preceding the season of fasting and abstinence The word itself is from Latin meaning “to remove meat," as was done during the Lenten fast Pancakes — There was a practical reason for the carnival as well as rejoicing. It served as a time for finishing off foods which could not be eaten during Lent and could not even be kept in homes during the fast, such as. meat, butter, cheese, milk. eggs, fat and bacon Using those ingredients, therefore, there was an increased consumption of rich foods and pastries the weeks before Lent That gave rise to such terms as “Fat Tuesday." which is "Mardi Gras" in French; "Butter Week" in England. Russia and other Slavic countries In England, the milk, eggs and butter were put to good use in pancakes, bringing about t he Shrove Tuesday custom of eating pancakes Quarantine — In early days, people who had committed serious public sin and scandal / were enjoined on Ash Wednesday J with the practice of puonir penance, with the period lasting until Holy Thursday, a period of 40 days During that time they were not allow ed to communicate with others The period of time, since it was 40 days, was called quarantine ." The word has been accepted in general usage to denonte separation or expulsion from human contact because of infectious diseases Spring cleaning — According to ancient tradition, the three days after Palm Sunday are devoted in many countries to a thorough cleaning of the house, the most intense cleaning of the whole year Carpets, sofas, arm chairs, and mattresses are carried into the open air and all dust is beaten out of them Floors and furniture are scrubbed and waxed, curtains are changed; windows are washed By Wednesday night everything must be back in place, sparkling clean, ready for the great feast which is to follow This cleaning which led to the practical or traditional spring cleaning, is taken from the Jewish practice of ritual cleaning and sweeping of the whole as

prescribed in preparation of the* Passover. Pretzels — Christians in the Roman Empire made a special dough of flour, salt and water (since fat, eggs and milk were forbidden) during Lent. They shaped the dough in the form of two arms crossed in prayer, to remind them that Lent was a season of penance and devotion. These breads were called “little breads." or "bracellae" in Latin. From that word, the Germans later coined the word "brezel" or “prezel" from which comes our word "pretzel.” Hallelujah — The word "alleluia" or “hallelujah" is one of the few Hebrew words adopted by the Christian church from apostolic times on It means. "Praise the Lord.” (3n the Saturday before the Septugesima (the third Sunday before Lent"), the ancient exPalm Sunday service at Turkey Creek The Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren in Gravelton. r 1 Nappanee. will be having specials on this Palm Sunday. clamation of joy and praise in Christian liturgy was officially discontinued in the Western church to signify the approach of the solemn season of Lent. It is not heard again until the vigil sendee of Easter, when it is used as a glorious proclamation of Easter joy. In early times “alleluia" was used only during Easter time by the Roman church. But it soon spread over the rest of the ecclesiastical year except during Lent The expression "Alleluia, the Lord is risen.” became the general greeting of Christians in early Medieval times on the Feast of the Resurrection. The word, as "hallelujah." has passed into modem usuage as an expression with the same basic meaning as "thank goodness!"
WORTH WATTING A LIFETIME FOR! That day a man named Simeon, a Jerusalem resident, was in the Temple. He was a good man, very devout, filled with the Holy Spirit and constantly expecting the Messiah to come soon. For the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen Him—God's anointed King. The Holy Spirit had.impelled him to go to the Temple that day; and so. when Mary and Joseph arrived to present the baby Jesus to the Lord in obedience to the law! Simeon was there and took the child in his arms, praising God. "Lord," he said, "now I can die content! For I have seen Him as You promised me I would. 1 have seen the Savior You have given to the world. "He is the light that will shine upon the nations, and he will be the glory of Your people Israel!" Joseph and Mary just stood there, marvelling at what was being said about Jesus. Simeon blessed them but then said to Mary. "A sword shall pierce your soul, for this child shall be rejected by many in Israel, and this to their undoing Hut He will be the greatest joy of many others. And the deepest thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed." Anna, a prophetess, was also there in the Temple that day She was the daughter of Phanuel. of the Jewish tribe of Asher, and was veryold. for she had been a widow for 84 years following seven years of marriage. She never left the Temple but stayed there night and day. worshiping God by praying and often going without food. She came along |ust as Simeon was talking w ith Mary and Joseph, and she also began thanking God and publicly proclaiming the Messiah's arrival to everyone in Jerusalem who had been awaiting the, coming of the Savior. Successful pastoring: a team, effort
It has often been said that behind every successful man there’s a woman responsible and though this isn’t always the case it does seem that some of the more successful church pastorships are the result of a husband-wife team effort. Such a team effort can be witnessed in the ministry of Rev. Paul Tinkle and his wife. Judy, of the First Brethren Church of Milford. Mrs. Tinkle says her husband has often told young men who are thinking of going into the ministry. “If your wife isn’t behind you. it just won’t work.” "Working in Milford has really

been a unique experience,’’ says Mrs. Tinkle. “We’ve worked more as a team here than ever before.” The pastor's wife describes the congregation as a “real loving people” who work with one another in getting things done. “They work with us, they consider his (Rev. - Tinkle’s) opinions and guidance in making their decisions. ' she says. Because Mrs. Tinkle doesn’t work outside of her home and church duties, she has more time to contribute to the later. Monday mornings are spent with the women’s fellowship working on the bazaar committee. There is much preparation and work put into this one fund raising event sponsored by the First Brethren Church early in November. Tuesday mornings are devoted to the Women’s Prayer and Bible Study and Mrs. Tinkle say’s the group has truly grown through prayer and sharing. She also teaches an adult class of 20-30 individuals in the church’s Bible School. college age men and women and young marrieds. It is this class that she says has been the “highlite” of her experience here in Milford. She describes the class as extremely energetic and that the members all show so much faith. Before moving to Milford she and her husband lived in Fort Wayne where they started a new church. She started a children’s learning center fashioned after the "Brethren House" in Florida. The center was -designed for school-aged children and consisted of various unstructured learning centers using tapes and headphones to interest the children. While in Fort Wayne the Tinkles devoted much time and effort into getting the church established. “We were ready for a church/ like Milford." says Mrs. Tinkle as she explained they have appreciated a more organized and established group then when in Fort Wayne. The Tinkles have three daughters, all married and living away from home. They are Paula Gray of Elkhart. Cheryl Kessler of Fort Wayne and Deanna Ladd of Columbia City.
