The business of the church

Each United Methodist Church, as a branch of the tree of God’s universal church, is given guidelines by the book “Discipline of the United Methodist Church,” and the annual conference in order that the business of the church may be done in an orderly fashion. Tlree phases of the church are episcopal, representative and connectional. These principles unite the many United Methodist churches.^ In the episcopal phase the pastor is appointed by the bishop and serves under the guidance of the local administrative board, which is the representative form of government in the local church. The connectional principles of the church brings all local churches together through the annual conference. Each church has two representatives at the conference. Calvary United Methodist Church. Syracuse, has an administrative board of 50 persons, who must be members in good standing of the church, which meets every two months. The members on the board are elected every year by the congregation Some of the duties of the administrative board of a local United Methodist Church are to receive reports, set goals, determine policy, authorize Pac-man fights back It took a little while to get going, but there’s finally an antivideo game backlash The current issue of . Electronic Games magazine carries an editorial defending the games from parents who want to keep their kids out of video game arcades Instead of creating juvenile delinquents, editor Arnie Katz says the games are "health spas for the mind," that keep kids peacefully occupied "Better a child should take out his aggressions on a game." Katz says, "than on another kid’s head

made the Knights and their family members leaders in aiding their fellow citizens You play an important role in the life of your communities by donating funds and giving of your time to worthy projects Throughout the century of your existence, the Knights have stood not only for help to their neighbors but also for the finest ideals of American fair play and equal treatment for everyone * * On behalf ol all Americans, we gratefully acknowledge your dedicated efforts to promote charity, brotherhood and family values Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone and may your charitable labors continue to reflect the best in the American spirit .” The letter was signed by President Ronald Reagan Eye-catching ad draws moral outrage It may be the first shotgun wedding in advertising history The couple, in this case, appears in a Washington Post ad for an apartment complex across the Potomac in Virginia They 're shown happily playing Scrabble, with the caption. "Maybe well get married, maybe we won't — but its a good investment.” After angry Virginians pointed out it s illegal for unmarried couples to live together in their state, the ad was pulled — and the developer, denying he wanted to promote lascivious behavior, promised to marry off the couple in future ads Sweet snore of success It turns out the rich are different from you'and me — they sleep better Researchers at the University of California say the more money you have, the better you sleep After studying residents of La Jolla Calif., they found inhabitants of the wealthy San Diego suburb were ‘•verysatisfied” with their sleep f»ttems. It turns out that it’s pretty easy to fall asleep when your life's a bed of roses: only four per cent of the men and 18 per cent of the women reported using sleeping pills — that’s far below the national average.

action and review the state of the church. At the Calvary United Methodist Church, Michael Neff is chairman of the administrative board. The vice chairman is Arlen Bobeck and Millie Shively is recording secretary. Along with this group various committees are involved in the business of the church. Primary function of the committee on pastor-parish relations is to aid the pastor or staff in making the ministry effective by being available for counsel. Paul Steele, pastor at Calvary United Methodist Church, stresses that the church is not a strict doctrinal church, the only condition of membership is a person must love the Lord and his neighbor Members need not conform to a strict creed. The committee on nomination and personnel nominates officers and members to the annual charge conference. The trustees of the church have supervision over all of the real and other property and equipment owned by the local church or any organization connected with the church. Calvary Church plans to build an addition to the church to include a fellowship hall and classrooms and is continuing its fund raising efforts toward that goal A finance committee is in charge of all financial requirements to be included in the annual budget which is submitted to the administrative board and implements plans to provide income for the local church. Other committees, as needed, make up the local church and through the annual conference United Methodist Churches strive to share the joys of a common ministry in the world. Study of the scriptures as away of life and being a dedicated and loyal follower of Christ are stressed. Emphasis is placed on a personal experience with Christ and belief in the fellowship of Christians united in worship and service.
