March 26. after capturing their third straight sectional title Thursday evening. March 18. The Wawasee girls defeated seven other teams for the title. Team scores were Wawasee. 84.20. Elkhart Memorial. 54.55; North Wood. 52. Jimlown. 12.35; Concord. 37.95; and Elkhart Central. 21.40. Ply mouth and Tippecanoe Valley received no points. Beth Walker will be traveling to the regional* after she placed among the top three in intermediate vaulting Tuesday evening. March 16. Milford gymnasts place first in invitational Wawasee High School hosted a Junior High Gymnastics Invitational on Saturday. .March 13. which included six area junior highs Milford Junior High, defending champions, won again this year with a total score of 97 80. Syracuse placed second with 8780; West Noble, 8665. Westview, 78.25; Lakeland. 74 95. and North Webster with 65 60 Placing from area junior highs in vaulting were Steff Swihart of Milford, who placed third; Irma Cruz of Milford took fifth; and Linda Lower of Milford and Belinda Whitridge of North Webster tied for sixth In tumbling Irma Cruz took first. Suellen Free placed second, and Heidi Beer, third, all from Jeanine Gunn of Syracuse placed fourth. Rhonda Amsden of Milford took fifth and Julie Schmahl of Syracuse placed sixth. In the floor exercise — Irma Cruz . first; Heidi Beer, second; Angie Smith, third; and Suellen Free fourth, all from Milford Gretchen Huffman placed fifth and Jeanine Gunn was sixth, both from Syracuse. On the balance beam Heidi Beer placed first in competition. Suellen Free took second, both of Milford; Stephanie Crow placed third and Jeanine Gunn placed fifth, both from Syracuse.

Sectional gymnastics title

Wawasee High School girls’ optional gymnastics team captured their third consecutive sectional title last Thursday. March 18. Wawasee was host for the eight-team competition on Tuesday and Thursday evening. March 16 and 18. The girls’ scored 84 20 points to retain their two-year title. Elkhart Memorial scored 54.55 to take second place followed by North Wood. 52; Jimtown. 52.35; Concord. 37.95; Elkhart Central, 21.40; and Plymouth and Tippecanoe Valley with zero points W’awasee took the lead on Milford gymnasts defeat Syracuse Milford Junior High’s gymnastics team defeated Syracuse on Saturday. March 20. The beginning team won by a score of 84.7 to 83 0 Placing for the beginning team was Steff Swihart with firsts in vaulting and floor exercise and third in tumbling. Suzy Baumgartner also took two firsts by tying with Steff in floor and taking first in tumbling Jacqui Schultz took the other first on beam Angie Smith took second in vaulting and third on floor Steff Jamiel and Autumn Street tied for third on the beam and Linda Lower took third in vaulting Intermediate The intermediate team also won by a score of 87.7 to 77.9. Suellen Free took two firsts in tumbling and beam and a fourth on floor Heidi Beer took first on floor, second on vault and beam, and fourth in tumbling Irma Cruz placed second in tumbling, and took thirds on beam, floor and vault Paula Smith placed fourth in vaulting In boys’ competition Anthony Beer took first in tumbling and vaulting Mike Redslob placed second and Mitch Price third The final gymnastics meet was held on Tuesday against Lakeland at Milford Plymouth in final four The Plymouth Pilgrims emerged from the Elkhart regional as champions and at Fort Wayne Semi-State played two excellent contests to become one of the final four teams headed for Indianapolis Saturday with hopes to be state champions The fourth-ranked Pilgrims defeated Marion in the first game at Fort Wayne Saturday. March 20. in overtime by a score of 56-55. Plymouth lead for the most part of the first three periods but the Giants of Manon caught up in the final stanza only to lose in the overtime by one point In the championship game at Fort Wayne. Plymouth defeated South Bend LaSalle 77-71. LaSalle previously defeated Plymouth during the regular season, the Pilgrims only loss LaSalle took off for an early lead, but with a little over three minutes remaining the Pilgrims pulled out ahead and kept the lead Scott Skiles scored 30 of the 77 Plymouth points in that game On Saturday Plymouth will face Indianapolis Cathedral, ranked number six Other teams in the final four are unbeaten, top ranked Evansville Bosse w ho will face Gary Roosevelt

Tuesday evening in the opening round of the sectional competition. However, despite Wawasee’s team win. Elkhart Memorial qualified more individuals for regional action with seven. Regional action will be Friday evening. March 26. at Valparaiso High School. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Regional Outlook Kim Conrad, coach, feels Wawasee will be competing in one of the toughest regional in the state with Merrillville winning their sectional and being placed as the top gymnastics team in the state. Also in the competition will be the Valparaiso girls who won their sectional and are the defending state champions. “Both these teams score an average 100 points per match, remarked Mrs. Conrad, who stated Wawasee’s average points per match is 86 to 87 points. Despite the tough competition she is hoping Jill Haab and Carol Meier will go on to state competition “I'm hoping for individual scores with Jill on the floor and Carol on the uneven bars.” remarked Mrs Conrad Last year. Heather Beer, was the only Warriorette to advance to state competition She qualified on the balance beam In order to qualify for the state, the team has to receive first place, and or an individual must receive a first, second or third in any of the events. This would include: all around, beam, floor, uneven bars and vault Excellent Performance Mrs Conrad stated that the girls gave an excellent performance on Thursday evening and quickly added that the sectional win was one of the team’s goals. “We met the team’s goal plus individual goals the girls set.” Because of an earlier injury. Milford gymnasts defeat Webster Milford’s gymnasts defeated North Webster T uestla y night. March 16. by a score of 85.20 to 74.3. Linda Lower and Steph Swihart tied for second in vaulting with Angie Smith placing third. Steph also took first in tumbling. Susan Geyer could not perform. “If she would not have been injured she would have been in the sectional.” remarked Mrs. Conrad. Geyer was injured in the February 9 home meet when dismounting from the balance beam. In the final evening of competition there were a number of surprises for the Wawasee team as Jill Haab performed her personal best in floor exercises by placing a 9.05 and Stacy Kline was surprised with her placing on the balance beam and floor exercise. She received a fourth place on the beam with a 6 35 and 8.35 on the floor. This was Kline's first year in optional team level competition. Wrestlers compete at Chesterton

A number of area wrestlers competed at an Amateur Athletic I nion Tournament at Chesterton Saturday, March 20. in which there were 641 total wrestlers In the Bantam division David Antu placed fourth in the 60pound class Mike Voder placed sixth in the 70-pound class. Midget division. Junior division second place winner, at 65 pounds, was Brad Gerstner.' Tom Mangas placed third. Junior division. 85 pounds. Two other Junior division wrestlers placed. Josh Lantz placed third at 100 pounds and Garrett Ponciroli placed fourth at 119 pounds.
