Warriors fall, Plymouth wins regional championship

Although they were defeated 85-76 by Elkhart Memorial in the second game of the regional. Wawasee played well against the Chargers. The title was captured by Plymouth, who defeated Elkhart Memorial in the championship game 77-74 after trailing for the better part of the first three quarters. Plymouth 74Man chester 55 In the first game Plymouth defeated Manchester 74-55. The, Pilgrims got an early lead, with the Squires trailing 24-11 at the end of the first quarter Plymouth maintained an 11-point, or better, lead throughout most of the contest Memorial 85Wawasee 76 The Warriors, after coming back from a slump at the end of the regular season, played an excellent game against the highly regarded Memorial Chargers. A big factor was Elkhart's out standing shooting percentage W'awasee hit a very respectable 29 of 60 shots from the field for 48 per cent, but the Chargers hit 33 of 55 from the field Jor 60 percent. Memorial sophomore Ernie Jones, who scored 14 points during the game, hit 100 per cent of his shots, six of six from the field and two of two free throws The Warriors had the rebound edge, led by Todd Davis who had 12. Brian Geiger, who was named to the all tourney team, scored 20 points. Jeff Long added 15 and Davis and Kent Stichter each had 13. Warrior Coach John Wysong said he was very pleased with the performance of the team and the boys’ ability to really work and come back to end the season in such a dignified manner Memorial's Ernie Jones hit the first basket of the second game, but Kent Stichter tied the game and Davis put Wawasee ahead 42. Coleman scored for Elkhart but Geiger put the Warriors back in the lead, hitting two free throws. Elkhart then took the lead on a three-point play by Coleman and Granitz made it 9-6 Geiger scored again, but then Elkhart hit four unanswered baskets Davis scored two for the Warriors but Jones and Lewis each got a bucket for the Chargers, and the first period ended with Memoiral leading 21-12. That first period lead was the deciding factor for the Chargers, because in the following quarters they outscored Wawasee by onlytwo in the second period, each team scored 21 in the third quarter and the Warriors scored 25 in the final period to 23 byElkhart At halftime Wawasee trailed 41-30. but midway through the third period, due to combined efforts of Davis, Long. With just under six minutes left in the game Wawasee again cut the lead to seven on baskets by Davis and Long, but the Warriors lost the chance to cut it to five when Kirk Stichter was called for a foul and Lewis hit two free throws. With 4:06 left in the game Brian Geiger fouled out and shortly afterwards Kirk Stichter’s fifth foul took him to the bench. Sophomore Jon Vitaniemi contributed to the efforts of the Warriors by scoring four points in the final minutes and Ron Spunar scored three. Jay Auer hit a field goal and Kevin Smith hit two free throws. It was a well played contest and the Warriors ended their season well They will lose six players to graduation: Auer. Long, Geiger, Davis and the Stichter twins Plymouth 77Memorial 74 In the championship game Scott Skiles scored 33 points for Plymouth, but even so the Pilgrims trailed for the first three periods. Memorial’s Ernie Jones hit 85 per cent of his shots from the field and five of six at the line, for 27 points against Plymouth. The Chargers led 23-17 at the end of the first period, 41-33 at halftime and 55-49 at the end of the third, but then Plymouth scored 13 unanswered points, to take the lead with just over six minutes left The remainder of the game was a back-and-forth contest, until with 51 seconds left Plymouth took the lead for the last time and went on to win by three.
