Hope runs high at Sarasota as White Sox talk of A.L. pennant

By Pete FritcHe SARASOTA. FLA. - The Chicago White Sox of the American League. West, are talking pennant in 1982. They think they have the power and pitching--and that Billy Martin's Oakland A's are likely to falter over the long season. The Sox have picked up Steve Kemp. a dangerous hitter from Detroit, and Tom Paciorek from Seattle. Last year they added Carlton Fisk. Greg Luzinski and Ron LeFlore from the Red Sox. Phillies and Tigers. They have young pitching and 22-year-old Britt Burns might be the key to 1982 hopes. He's the highest paid pitcher on the Sox staff, and in the history of the club--with a 3-year $1.65 million contract. Then there is promising Steve Trout. Jerry Koosman and Ross Baumgarten for left-handed strength and Lamar Hoyt and Richard Dotson. Bums told reporters at the opening of training here the attitude of the club is more positive than last year, when thirigs began to change, and manager Tonny Laßussa took over. "We’re talking World Series,” he said. The thought is that the addition of two hitters like Kemp and Paciorek will take the pressure off Fisk and Luzinski. since both the new acquisitions can hit the long ball. (Chet Lemon, whom the Sox gave up to get Kemp, is a high average hitter and a fine fielder, but not particularly a long-ball hitter.) Chicago came in third in the first half of last year’s shortened season, with a fine 31 and 22 record. They stumbled in the second half (as did Oakland but not as badly), and as Kansas City had done in the first half. There seems no doubt that the Sox will score runs. The question is whether young Bums and the other pitchers can hold down other teams. Burns posted a fine 2.64 earned run average and won ten games last year. Manager Laßussa will be looking over pitchers for the

next few weeks. Exhibition games began on the 7th and the last will be played April 2. By that time, some idea of the ten pitchers he’ll probably carry during the season will be in Laßussa’s mind. If the pitchers come through. Chicago might be in the race to the end. as Bums predicts. Kansas City and Oakland are the tough opposition again, with Oakland having the best pitching and Kansas City--possibly--be-ginning to age. But the Sox also have some veterans who may be past their peak, including Fisk and Luzinski. and whether they come through big this year may have as much to do with White Sox fortunes as the pitching staff. New owners Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn have put out the money to assemble a power-hitting club with young pitching. They paid a handle especially to Fisk, and the big catcher must come through and stay unhurt (which he hasn't often done) to justify his salary. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1.
