Closing Ag Weather Service could hurt Hoosier farmers
Indiana farmers stand to lose up to S2O million in weatherrelated crop damages if the Reagan Administration goes ahead with its plans to close the Agricultural Weather Service Center at Purdue University, Congressman Floyd Fithian told a House Subcommittee today (Wednesday) "Whoever devised this plan does not realize how important the American farmer is to our country." Fithian said. “If passed it will mean higher crop losses for our farmers and higher grocery store prices for our consumers." The administration’s proposed 1983 budget would close the four agriculture weather stations around the country. The Lafayette station services farmers throughout Indiana, Ohio. Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky. These stations provide ground temperature, water evaporation and insect control data which farmers use to decide when to plant, spray pesticides and harvest. Purdue University agronomists estimate that the Lafayette weather station eliminated 10 per cent of the S2OO milion in weather-related crop damage which Indiana farmers suffered in 1981. Farmers also fear that extra production costs will force them to spray pesticides an extra time, Fithian said. "The average Indiana farmer has to pay $3,300 for each pesticide application." he testified. “The last thing our farmers need is an added production cost of this size. "This is one of the most
