Wawasee 59 — Westview 57

Overtime victory for Wawasee

It was Warrior against Warrior Tuesday. Feb. 23. as Wawasee traveled to Westviews to play a game rescheduled from the snow days in January Wawasee won 59-57 in overtime in a game that was a thriller for the entire contest Wawasee put the first points on 'the board on long shot by Brian Geiger. West view scored and Geiger hit again LeMonte tied the score, but a tip in by Todd Davis put Wawasee ahead and Kent Stichter made it 8-4 Westview hit two consecutive points to tie the score at eight midway through the first period Long and Geiger added points for the visiting team and at the end of the first quarter Wawasee led their hosts 12 to 10. The second period was much the same story Neither team gained more than a three-point lead at any time in the quarter Just before the buzzer sounded at halftime a field goal by Jeff Long put Wawasee ahead and they lead going into the half 25-33. In the third period Wawasee' had some trouble connecting on some of their shots The rebound efforts of Westview’s Scott Cripe were hard to beat, but Wawasee’s Warriors did a good job themselves Davis and Kirk Stichter pulled down some crucial rebounds At the end of the third quarter it was Westview in the lead by one. 38-37 For the entire fourth period neither team pulled away to lead by more than three Kirk Stichter connected two long shots. Geiger was consistent and Ron Spunar added to Wawasee defense with important rebounds With 1 27 left m the game Westview was leading 53-51. but a field goal by Geiger tied the game at 53 Cripe quickly put Westview back in the lead and Kirk Stichter tied it up at 55. where it stayed until the end of regular time - The momentum turned Wawasee’s way at the beginning of the overtime, when Westview missed and Huggins fouled Geiger Geiger hit two free throws and Kent Stichter stole the ball on the in bounds play Fairfield to meet West Noble in 1982 t tourney opener The Falcons from Fairfield will meet the Chargers from West Noble in the opening game of the 1982 East Noble Sectional tournament The game will begin at 7 30 p m on Tuesday. March 2 Lakeland and Howe Military will meet at 7 p m on Wednesday with Bethany Christian and East Noble playing at 8:30 p m West view drew the bye and will meet the winner of the FairfieidWest Noble game at 7 p m on Friday with the winners of the other two games meeting at 8 30 p m on Friday Milford | defeats Ki Concord The Milford Junior High wrestling team defeated Concord Monday evening. Feb 22. by a score of 41-30 Those Trojans who earned points for the team were Albert Strickler with two. Gilbert Rico and Ned Hunsberger Family swim ~ night continues Family Swim Night continues at the Wawasee High School pool. The swimming hours will be from 7-8 30 pm each Monday . evening All students must be accompanied by an adult when participating in the Family Swim However the adults do not have to swim. If the adult does not swim no admission charge will be required, but the adult must remain at the pool to supervise the student Admission charge for the Family Swim is 50 cents per swimmer.

Stichter wasted no time, after taking the ball under his own basket, to put it through the hoop and put his team in the lead 59-55 Spunar fouled Cripe and be hit Westview’s only points in the overtime. Huggins was fouled with 44 seconds left and had a chance to tie the score, but missed. Spunar then missed a free throw attempt when he was fouled by Cripe and Westview got another chance, but Huggins missed the field goal and Long came away with the rebound Wawasee then missed a field goal attempt, but with only four seconds remaining Westview couldn't catch up and Wawasee won the two-point thriller JV Game Another Close One The junior varsity game was another exciting one, but Wawasee was on the other side of the victory, as they lost 5049. At the end of the third period Westview was leading 32-30. Both Long/ Geiger still among leaders Wawasee’s Jeff Long and Brian Geiger are still among the list of Northern Lakes Conference scoring leaders Long has scored '315 points in 18 games, averaging 17.5 points and Geiger has scored 235 points in 18 games with an average of 13.1 points per game Other well-known players on the list are Todd Beer, grandson of Mr and Mrs Theo Beer. With 56 seconds left in regulation time Jerry Auer hit a long field goal and put Wawasee ahead 42-40. but Rob Yoder quickly tied it back up The regulation time ended tied at 42. Westview got the tip in the overtime, but lost the ball on a missed field goal. Wawasee lost the ball out of bounds, then stole the ball and los» it to Westview who scored. Joel Rhoades was fouled and tied the game with two free throw-s but Westview quickly got the lead back when Fisher scored. Then Westview got a four-point lead when Yoder was fouled byJerry Auer and hit two. With 27 seconds left Auer cut the Westview lead to two with a basket, but Kim Zurcher was called for a foul and Hart gave Westview back the four-point lead. Wawasee’s Zurcher put the Warriors back within one on a free throw, with two seconds left and Rhoades hit a field goal on the rebound to make the Westview victory only one. The junior varsity team will play its last game Friday against a tough Bremen team on the Lions'home floor. Sectional tickets to be on sale Triton Sectional tickets will be on sale at Wawasee High School, Thursday and Friday mornings, Feb. 25 and 24, for adult and student season ticket holders only. On Friday afternoon the ticket sales will be opened up to nonseason ticket holders, provided tickets remain. All tickets may be purchased at the Wawasee High School Athletic Office between 8 a .m. and 4 p.m. on both days.

Goshen and CC both eliminated Both the Goshen High School Girls’ basketball team and the Columbia City- girls’ basketball team were defeated in semi-state action Saturday. Feb. 20. at Fort Wayne Northrop. Goshen girls’ dropped a 38-30 decision to Marion in the second game ending their finest season with a 21-3 record. Goshen was the Elkhart Regional Champions Warsaw Regional winner Columbia City, previouslyunbeaten and ranked number two, was upset by Heritage 47-45 in the opener. Heritage returned at night to defeat number five ranked .Marion 56-36. Heritage was the surprise winner of the semi-state action. Heritage. 23-2, will meet 20-1 Sullivan at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, in the opening game of the state finals at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis. Brebeuf, 252, meets Valparaiso. 20-5. at 12:30 p.m. with the championship game atß:lsp.m’ Plymouth No. 1 With Plymouth being named the number one team in the state this week all eyes will be on the Plymouth Sectional next week. Culver Military and Argos will open the sectional at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with LaViUe and John Glenn meeting at 8. 30 p.m. On Friday it will be Northern Lakes Conference foes Bremen and Plymouth and the winners of the Wednesday night games. The finals will be held at 7:30 p m on Saturday. Churubusco has bye at Columbia City Churubusco has the bye at the Columbia City Sectional with North Manchester and Whitko meeting in the tourney opener on Wednesday. Playing in the opening game on Friday will be Columbia City and Central Noble. Warriors win easy battle over Northfield's Norsemen

When the Wawasee basketball team traveled to Northfield, near Wabash. Friday they came home the undisputed victors, winning 89-62 over the Norsemen. The hosts for the 1982 Mid-West Regional Water Ski Championships are Indiana State Ski Club, Pepsi-Cola, and Camelot Lake. The tournament will be held on July 30-31 and August 1. Skiers from 10 states are expected to participate in the event. Members of the State Ski Club, . Clark and Sue Smith of Camelot Lake, Don and Peggy Bucher of Cindonway Shores, and Kim Centos of Tippycanoe Lake, attended a meeting in Chicago, 111., held February 13 and 14, along with other members, to submit the bids to the AWSA Regional Council Members ot the Tomahawk, Wisconsin Ski Chib also bid for this tournament. Wawasee had an outstanding third quarter, scoring 30 points. Much of the Warrior bench saw action in the third period. Sophomore Jon Vijaniemi was the team high rebounder with eight. AU Warrior team members were able to see action some time during the game and, pursuant to the new team strategy, the team enjoyed the game, according to the coach, The Warrior defense showed what it can do, holding the Norsemen to less than 15 points per quarter, in all but the fourth period. Team high scorers were Kent Stichter. with 30, and Kirk Stichter, his twin brother, who had 14, his season high. The Warriors had two other players in double figures. Long had 11 and Jay Auer scored 10. Northfield had trouble with turnovers, giving the baU to the Warriors out of bounds a number of times, often forced by the press of Wawasee’s defense. The Wawasee record after the Northfield game, before facing Westview Tuesday, is 10-8. On Friday the Warriors wiU travel to Bremen for the final game of the season.
