WASHINGTON. D. C. - Tennis doesn't create the TV viewer interest it should. That's partly because tennis seems to be a sport in which one or two players gain dominance. It was for a time Bjorn Borg: before him Jimmy Connors and today it’s John McEnroe--unless he’s stopped at Wimbledon in June by Borg, again. The others, with some occasional exceptions, just don't seem to figure. Everyone knows Roscoe Tanner has a great serve and* that several of the others-Lendl for exampleare interesting. star or stars is far more pronounced than in golf, for example. On the PG tour, a whole host of golfers win the weekly tournaments, and any tournament can be captured by almost any of the top ■ players. That simply isn’t true in tennis. If it were, tennis would be a greater draw on the tube. In that sense. McEnroe, being so good (and a spoiled brat), hurts the game. When he plays finals against other p’os. the outcome is almost a certainty. And in some recent matches, one can tell that McEnroe’s opponent has just about quit. That doesn’t build the suspense or viewer interest.

Elkhart Memorial downs WHS
Once again the final four minutes of the fourth quarter proved to be the downfall of the Warriors as they were defeated 75-71 by a visiting Elkhart Memorial team Saturday night. In the fatal quarter the Warriors made only three of 10 shots while the Chargers hit seven of 13. Both Brian Geiger and Todd Davis turned in outstanding performances during the game. Geiger scored a total of 22 points, 11 in the third quarter Davis hit a season high of 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. He made 10 of those points in the first quarter. Geiger was held scoreless in the final period. The Chargers, fresh off a victory over South Bend LaSalle Friday night, were on the scoreboard first with a basket by Tom Granitz. Goal tending on Davis gave the Chargers a 0-4 lead early in the game. Jeff Long, however, broke the ice for the Warriors a few seconds later. Geiger gave the Warriors the first tie of the game at 6-6, then put Wawasee in the lead 7-6 on a foul shot for a three-point play. The Warriors were on top 21-16 at the end of the first quarter. During the second stanza the Warriors maintained the lead with Kent Stichter hitting his first basket, a long shot at the buzzer, to make the half time score 45-39. Elkhart Memorial began to gain momentum during the third quarter as only Geiger, junior Kevin Smith and Davis scored for the Warriors during the quarter. At the buzzer Wawasee was only in front by one point — 60-59. It was a shot by Granitz that put the Chargers in front 62-60. The game would be tied three times during the quarter, at 63-63 and at 67-67 and again at 69-69 before the Chargers pulled away to win 71-75. Geiger and Davis were the only Warriors in double figures. Terry Coieman and Chns Powers tied at 20 each to lead the Chargers’ ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who won the NBA AllStar game? 2.
