By SHARON STOCKMAN The season came to an end for the Lady Warriors in the final game of the regional Saturday, at Warsaw, after they lost to second-ranked Columbia City girls, 59-39. Wawasee’s girls played good rebounding in the championship game and came within three shortly before the end of the third period. In the first game, Saturday, Columbia City easily defeated East Noble by a score of 76-41 and in the second game Wawasee rolled over Culver Girls' Academy 60-33. The first half of the WawaseeCulver game was a close contest. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee led by only’ one, 12-11, and at halftime the score was 2422 in favor of the Warrior girls. Quilhot got a basket early in the third quarter to tie the score at 24. Wawasee then scored eight unanswered points, six of them by Schacht. Culver s girls scored only six points in the third period and Wawasee scored 20. making the score 44-28 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was even worse for the girls from Culver, as they scored only five points in that period and Wawasee 16. Twelve of Wawasee’s points in the second half were scored by senior Lee Schacht In the second half she was five of five from the field and two of two from the charity stripe She scored the game high. 14 points total. The Warriors depended, as usual, on teamwork effort and relied on the bench Nine of the 12-girl roster put point/on the board against Culver Jessica Steinbrenner, daughter of well-known New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, did not intimidate Wawasee with her presence in the Culver line, although some Wawasee fans were seen seeking autographs from the baseball team owner Championship Game In the championship game the Warrior girls kept close for half of the first period Midway through the first quarter the score was six-five in favor of Columbia CityThen Phillips got two consecutive field goals. The third quarter belonged to Wawasee They cut the lead to three points with 37 seconds left in the third period Card Walker scored six of the 16 third period points. Stichter scored three and Cheryl Walker. Tona Sellers and Myra Ruch each hadtwo in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with Columbia City leading 39-34 and Wawasee hopes high. In the final quarter the Lady Warriors couldn’t connect on their shots and the Lady Eagles couldn’t miss Columbia City hit 10 of 12 free throws and five of six from the field, while Wawasee hit only three of eight free throws in the third period and one of 16 field goals The Lhdy Warriors had several girls in foul trouble in the final period Maude Packer and Grace Stichter both fouled out of the game Schacht and Carol Walker each had four fouls Columbia City had only one player with four fouls.

Syracuse teams stopped in Camelot tourney
Syracuse Yellow Jackets boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both finished second in the Camelot eighth grade team basketball tourney. Wednesday. Feb. 10 and Thursday, Feb. 11. The tourney ended the season for both teams. In girls action the YellowJackets defeated Pierceton 17-11 to earn a spot in the finals. Steph Eldridge and Lori Galloway combined for 14 points and both rebounded well to lead Syracuse The Jackets were defeated by Pierceton during the regular season by one point. In the finals the Yellow Jackets tost to the Akron Flyers. 15-13. Syracuse led early in the game and rallied to tie it up after faUing behind. With 20 seconds left in the game Akron scored and the

Yellow Jackets were unable to get a basket. The Syracuse girls ended the season with a 7-3 record. Boys In Finals The Syracuse eighth grade boys’ team advanced to the finals by defeating South Whitley, 48-30. The Yellow Jackets jumped into a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. David Kistler then scored four baskets to help the Jackets to a 26-12 margin at halftime. The second half was an even contest but the early lead was to much for South Whitley to op\come. Kistler scored 16 points, Brad Traviolia, 12 and I rice Pounds, 10 to lead the Yellow Jackets. The finals proved to be a dif<f ‘rent story for the Yellow as they were defeated by Wakarusa, 42-25. Behind 12-6 at the end for the first quarter to Wakarusa, they completely lost their shooting eye in the second quarter and scored only one point. At half time the score was 20-7. Traviolia and Kister led Syracuse to an 18 point second half but it wasn’t enough against the taller Indians. The loss ended Syracuse's season with a 7-5 record. Wrestling season to open The Milford Junior High wrestling team has been working very hard to prepare for the upcoming season which starts on Thursday, Feb. 18. at Concord Junior High. » The highlight of the season will be the Junior High Wrestling Invitational Tournament at Wawasee High School in which there will be 17 teams from Northern Indiana There will also be seven dual meets in which Milford Junior High will have an opportunity to find out how much they have learned as a result of their hard work in practice. The seventh grade team players are Ben Beer, C. J. Harwood. Joe Hernandez. Harvey Melendez, and Al Stricklin. Eighth graders on the wrestling team are Stephen Galagor. David Hampton. Elias Hernandez. Eliseo Hernandez, pied Hunsberger. Joe Melendez, Oscar Pena, Lee Price. Gilbert Rico. Carl Rouch. Mike Troup and John Zimmerman Bob Northrup is team manager and Dave Matz is the coach. only two girls to graduation. Lee Schacht and Myra Ruch are both seniors and the Warriors will miss their efforts next year, but have a fine group of girls ready for next season. Goshen girls in "Sweet 16"
Goshen High School girls’ basketball team received a special Valentine present by winning the regional championship, Saturday, Feb. 13, at North Side Gym in Elkhart. The girls are now among the Sweet 16.
* The Redskins beat Bremen, SO--39, in the championship game after defeating John Glenn, 54-26, in the earlier bout. Bremen had eliminated South Bend Adams, 55-44, in the opener. The girls are now 21-2 and post the best season ever and have captured the school’s first regional title in girls' basketball. Next Saturday's semi-state at Fort Wayne Northrop will see the Redskins meeting state power Marion at 12:30p.m.

Intermediate gymnasts defeat Tippe Valley
The Wawasee gymnastics team traveled to Tippecanoe Valley Monday. Feb. 15. Tippecanoe Valley did not have an optional team and, therefore, did not compete in the optional events. Wawasee's optional team scored 51.8. The Warrior intermediate team defeated the Viking gymnasts 74.2 to 72.0. Debbie Haab placed first on intermediate beam and first all around. She also placed second in the intermediate bars and second in vaulting. First in intermediate vault and floor went to Wawasee’s Beth Walker Michelle Berger placed Girls to be honored on March 4 at WHS Wawasee Girls* basketball coach Dale Brannock has announced that the recognition program to honor the girls, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 27, has been postponed until Thursday evening. March 4, at 7:39 in the Wawasee High School Cafeteria Annex.

North Wood 61-Wawasee 53 Warriors fall behind Panthers
A third quarter comeback by the Warriors came before the fourth quarter slump at North Wood Friday, when Wawasee was defeated 61-53 by the Panthers. As in so many of the games Wawasee has lost this season, one of the big problems was fouls. Wawasee had only nine attempts

On February 9 they defeated West Noble’s optional team by a score of 86.9 to 78.5. which was incorrectly stated in last week's article. The intermediate team now has a 3-1 record for the season. Both teams are scheduled to compete Tuesday. Feb. 23. at Wawasee against Plymouth. Three among leaders Wawasee Warriors have three varsity basketball players among the area leaders in points. Among those players are Jeff Long, Brian Geiger and Kent Stichter. Stichter has been off the list for sometime due to illness. Long has scored 302 points in 16 games for an average of 18.9 while Geiger has cored 215 points in the same number of games. His average is 13.4. Stichter has scored 108 points in 10 games for an average of 10.8. The top point leader is Scott Skiles, Plymouth, with 551 points in 18 games. His average is 30.6.

The Panthers got an early lead, taking off to outscore Wawasee 18-8 in the first period In the second quarter both teams scored 12 points, making the Panther lead 30-23 at halftime. In the third quarter Wawasee shifted the momentum of the game their way, came up urth some key rebounds, and outscored the Panthers 22-13. At the beginning of the fourth quarter North Wood was leading by only two, 45-43. But the Warrior offense slowed and they failed to take good shots. Wawasee scored only eight points in the final period and dd not do well on the boards. The Panthers scored 18 points in the final period, capitalizing on free throws and rebounds. The Warriors had two players in double figures. Jeff Long had 20 points and Brian Geiger 18. The Panthers had three team members in double figures. Todd Beer had 18, Mike Yeater 14 and Kevin Riley scored 13. The eight point victory made North Wood 5-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference and Wawasee 2-3intheNLC. Previous to Saturday’s game with Elkhart Memorial the Warriors had a 9-6 overall record, with only five regular season games remaining.
