Think twice before buying dented cans
By PAT RATHBUN Extension Home Ec In an attempt to reduce food bills, some consumers willingly purchase products in dented cans, slit packages, and items that have sat on the shelf past their expiration dates. Saving money may be a prime concern, but think twice before buying dented cans reduced in price. Even if you can’t see a leak in the can, air may be getting in. When this happens, the product's safety cannot be guaranteed. If food cartons have been slit, shoppers must beware of air leaks as well. If the carton has a plastic liner and it is slit, do not buy the food. Soft ruffled sweaters continue to be favorites in fashion circles. Cardigans and slipovers feature ruffled collars and cuffs. Cover-up Cover all liquids in the refrigerator to save energy. Otherwise the moisture from the liquids is drawn into the air making the appliance work harder.

No-till meeting at Warsaw
A no-till information meeting, sponsored by the Ortho Chemical Company and the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), will be held at the Shrine Building in Warsaw on Thursday evening. Feb. 25. beginning at 6:30 p.m. Topics to be discussed include the benefits of different no-plow tillage systems, nitrogen fertilization, herbicide application, treatment of armyworms and the results of the 1981 no-till program. Area farmers who have used no-till will be on hand to discuss their experiences. Representatives of Seelers and Sons: and Yeiter's Farm Equipment dealerships, who are providing no-till planters for rental, will also be present at the evening meeting More and more acres are being planted through the no-till method. No-till has shown benefits in reducing soil erosion, fuel consumption and time and labor in the field. Other benefits include moisture conservation, less soil compaction, more intensive rotations on erosive soils and double-crop capability. The individual farmer will realize less capital tied up in
Often, products beyond marketing dates are reduced for quick sale. The temperature at which the product has been stored and the processing it received will determine if the product is safe to use after its recommended date. If you can use the product right away, you may want to buy it. Day-old bakery products are a good buy. If you purchase in quantity, freeze the baked goods (only for a month or less because moisture is lost after a longer time in the freezer). However, be conscious of using your freezer space wisely. By storing bread for a month you may be taking space that could be better used for a special meat sale and seasonal vegetables.
