Lakeland area great place to work, to live, to play
It has been said that 85 per cent of the potential growth in Kosciusko County lies in its northeastern section — the Lakeland area! This area is a great place to live, to work and to play — it’s about as diversified a place as there is around The area is on the move with progress being seen in each of the communities. The towns here are individual communities. yet they pull together, giving the area a big plus Each community is a warm, friendly place in which to live, to work and to raise a family Educational facilities are among the best in the state. The Lakeland Community School Corporation serves the townships of Tippecanoe. Turkey Creek. Van Buren and the east half of Jefferson and the towns of Milford. North Webster and Syracuse Each of these towns has its own elementary and junior high school with students traveling to Wawasee High School, south of Syracuse, for their secondary schooling Besides an outstanding curriculum for students, the Lakeland schools also offer adult education programs with both credit and non-credit courses The Lakeland area is a beehive of activity in the summer, however, it does not come to a standstill in the winter with both North Webster and Syracuse holding winter carnivals. Snowmobiling, ice skating, skiing, ice fishing and the like keep people busy when the winter snows arrive. Those who would rather stay indoors can be found bowling or gathered around tables with coffee in hand, discussing the latest community and world events There is no way to get around the fact it is the summer months that make the area come alive. This is caused by two factors: 1. Even in this day of one crisis after another, people enjoy coming to the lakes 2. A large portion of the area around the lakes is farmland Each year thousands flock to Kosciusko County from Chicago, Indianapolis. South Bend. Fort Wayne and other metropolitan areas to get away from the busy city life for a few short

weeks and enjoy the change of pace the lakes have to offer. Syracuse is host to the lakes area with Lakes Wawasee, Syracuse and Bonar close to its town limits. The population of Turkey Creek Township doubles each year during the summer season and as the warm summer sun brings higher and higher temperatures the population triples and keeps on climbing. Milford lies directly west of Syracuse and is the farming community of the three towns. It also lays claim to one of the best public beaches in the area — Lakeside Park on Waubee Lake. The park is owned and operated by the town. Dewart Lake is also only a short distance from Milford. North Webster, host to the famous Mermaid Festival, is directly south of Syracuse on SR 13. This, the smallest of the three towns, has taken on the theme of "King Arthur” and his court. Webster Lake, Backwater and the Barbee Chain as well as Lake Tippecanoe are but a few of the lakes close to this Lakeland community. Boating on the lakes is popular. So are fishing and skiing. Marinas are found on mos» of the larger lakes and on many of the smaller ones as well. Ski clubs have been formed and competitions held throughout the summer months. One only has to drive a short distance to find a public park or picnic area. They may be found in all of the Lakeland communities. Golfers can find the course of their choice too with three 18-hole public courses and one private country club. For those who enjoy swimming, beaches are found throughout the area with the one on Waubee Lake and the town-owned park and beach on Syracuse Lake being the two most popular. Lifeguards are on duty at both beaches during specific hours. Swimming lessons are given each summer at the pool at Wawasee High School and competitive swim teams are in action in the summer as well as during the winter months with the WHS pool as their home base. All in all. the Lakeland area is a great place to live, to work and to play.
