Dome Pipeline Corp, on 1,900-mile pipeline
Dome Pipeline Corporation’s Milford facility is a truck loading propane terminal located on CR 50W about one mile north of Milford and one mile east of SR 15. “Propane that is picked up here is destined for industrial users and retail plants.’’ explained Terminal Supervisor 6 Steve Hurst The Milford propane terminal is located adjacent to the Cochin Pipeline System and has two truck loading spots capable of loading up to 144 trucks per day. The terminal is fully automated and computerized on a 24-hour key-stop basis with 1.440.000 gallons of storage capacity. It is capable of loading propane at 640 gallons per minute In fact, the Milford terminal is so automated only three persons are employed at the local Dome Pipeline terminal Besides Hurst. Dome also employs two terminal technicians. Gregg Schweitzer and Dwight Traxler Cochine Pipeline The Cochine Pipeline, on which the Milford terminal is situated, is a 1.900mile. single 12 meh diameter pipeline The pipeline begins at Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta. Canada; traverses two. Canadian provinces and seven American states; and terminates in Sarnia. Ontario The Cochin Pipeline has several injection and delivery terminals situated along its 1.900 miles. The Milford plant is one of those delivery terminals The pipeline is used to transport ethane, ethylene and propane. The pipeline system consists of 31 pumping stations and injection delivery points. The stations are spaced 51 to 65 miles apart, each one consisting of a centrifugal pump driven by a 2,000 horsepowerelectricmotor. According to Hurst. “We shippied aproximately 44 million gallons out of Milford in 1981." Although Dome-Pipeline in Milford is manned from 8 a m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, drivers may pick up propane shipments 24-hours-a<iay by use of an on-site computer system. Each driver is issued a computer card after he or she has completed the necessary training The driver puts the card into a computerized card reader at the front gate The gate will then open and the driver may proceed with loading procedures The on site computer controls the allocations available for each customer.

The computer stores all essential loading information and provides a computer read-out of the transaction. The computer records the identity of the driver, the date and time, the shipper, the driver's destination, the loading spot and how much propane was taken. “This is a security device and provides a written record of transactions.” explained Hurst. Safety Devices Hurst pointed out the terminal's many safety features. A computer monitors all truck loading and features eight fire detectors and eight gas detectors. He stated a warning is sounded if gas reaches 40 per cent of its “lower flamability." When it reaches 50 per cent, a complete shut down of all the facilities occurs Hurst said the fire detectors work in the same way. Warnings and shut-downs are constantly monitored by the home office in Calgary. Alberta, through supervisory control equipment “All field instrumentation and safety devices are given a complete check every six months. - ' remarked Hurst He added meters are checked once a month. He also pointed out the many large fire extinguishers placed at strategic locations throughout the facilities which, according to Hurst, have never had to be used. The terminal also has an emergency back-up power system. The back-up system can operate the terminal’s essential functions for six to eight hours m case of a total power failure. Other features at Dome Pipeline include a laboratory that tests each batch of propane received through the Cochin Pipeline and a pumping station that c keeps the gas flowing to terminals futher downstream Hurst said it takes three to four weeks for gas to travel from its point of origin at Fort Sakatchewan to Milford. Dome Petroleum Corporation Dome Pipeline Corporation is owned by Dome Petroleum which is a major , North American producer, transporter and marketer of crude, natural gas and natural gas liquids Dome Petroleum is a major owner and operator of the Cochin Pipeline System with 1980 natural gas sales of 101.384 barrels per day. Hurst has been the Milford terminal supervisor for four years. When askedi about the future of the natural gas industry. Hurst replied. “I think that it is a viable alternative to OPEC."
