Family-owned Ace Pest Control, 3 generations of hard, honest work
The idea behind Ace Pest Control, Inc of Syracuse had its beginning over 50 years ago during the great depression when a young man by the name of Howard E. Long, Sr.. employed as a bell hop at the Oliver Hotel in South Bend, got a lucky break into the beginning of the pest control business. Long was admired for his youth and ambition by a Mr. Bailey, then the owner of the South Bend Window Cleaning Company, who frequented the hotel's coffee shop Baiiy asked Long to assist him in a new venture he was starting, the South Bend Exterminating Company Accepting the offer, he became the company’s first exterminator Long started his own business in the mid-3Qs and some years later his son. H. E (‘‘Red “) Long" Jr., assisted on his first bed bug extermination at the tender age of seven years. This marked the beginning of a lifelong career for the younger of the Longs, who officially joined the family business in the early 1950 s In the late ’6os and early ‘7os the business was incorporated and its central offices were moved from South Bend to Lake Wawasee. It was also during this time that Long s son. Greg L Long, the third generation, was added to the family-owned business Today Ace Pest Control serves a sevencounty area ranging from Elkhart to Warsaw and from Warsaw Ohio state line It is one of the oldest and largest family-owned and operated pest control businesses in the state. Major Assets A list of successful attributes for the company might be headed with “a bell hop's lucky break.” yet Red Long has an interesting theory relating to the i word “luck":

Laboring Vnder Correct Knowledge. This concept of knowledge based on the correct education along with the proper application is really a key factor in the company’s success Long lists the company's major assets first as honesty based on a solid business and secondly he lists education Because pest control needs have changed over the years, due partly to the introduction of central heating systems and appliances that harbor insects and their eggs, the exterminator must now identify umpteen varieties of insects and remove them without endangering man or his environment. Seventy-five per cent of Ace's staff are certified by the state which is impressive when you consider that the average is five per cent for a pest control business in the state of Indiana — “Red” has served as president and director of the Indiana Pest Control Association and is a past director of the National Pest Control Association. He is currently the governmental affairs officer for the national association. His son. Greg, is presently the director for ■ the state association. And since both men were elected to these positions by their competitors they take pride in fufilling these offices All In The Family No family operated business can be successful with out proper office management and that's where Long's wife. Rosemarie, comes in. She has been in charge of Ace's interior operations during the last twelve years. For the last two years she has been assisted by their daughter,'Angela, on a part time basis through the summer break. Prospects for the future are continuing to look up and Long says, “New and safer
