Syracuse has a lot to offer

Syracuse has a population of 2.572 according to the 1980 census, with 935 residences and 130 businesses This Lakeland Community has a lot to offer. During the summer Syracuse, and the surrounding area is the home for thousands of vacationers and summer residents Syracuse Town Board President (. arl Myrick talked about the ac comphshments of the town board last year All wells are now in tip top shape and have either been cleaned or the pumps rebuilt. "The water department is 4n excellent shape as far as we re con terned." stated Myrick L As for the sewer department. Myrick commented there are a lot of problems but quickly added that in 1980 the town applied for and received monies for Step I of an Environmental Protection Agency Grant Step I includes an infiltration, inflow analysis study which will soon be completed Myrick added once Step 1 is completed the town will start on Step 11 and do "whatever it takes this year to work on that as hard as we can to get things going We re in bad trouble and getting more infiltration." stated Myrick. There are employees working at the sewer department 18 hours daily keeping the plant operational In discussing the street department Myrick said the streets in town are not in good shape but the town board members are doing all they can with the monies

Myrick added the board is looking at one federal program for street work The town now has more equipment than in past years Recently they purchased a back hoe and a new snow blade, bringing the town s snowplows to three. "Another snow blade was recently purchased but has not been mounted on the truck yet.” said Myrick This will bn ng the total blades to four The town's fire department is in fine shape according to Myrick. There are 30 firemen on the department. “We have an excellent ambulance service with well trained emergency medical technicians." he added along with the fact the EMTs are still receiving ad ditional training and taking refresher courses The town has a five-man police force with two cars, a new car is on order and the other is less than a year old There are also reserve officers available. Myrick commented the police department now has a membership to the South Bend Police academy which the town pays for and at any time officers may attend programs which are being offered “It’s a very good academy." stated Myrick In other accomplishments last y ear the town paid off the debt of the town hall and is in the process of getting a set of plans together as to what should be done with the property owned by the town. According to Joe Gray of the Syracuse Wawasee Area Development Company, which was formed 14 years ago. they are trying to pen up a new industrial area totalling 25 acres but are looking for financing Phyllis Louden, president of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce. said the progress made by the chamber includes the forming of the Syracuse-Wawasee Area Development Company for the purpose of strengthening commercial ventures and increasing availability of more light
