Words of wisdom Just like a two-by-four

By G. EDWARD GEANS Minister “Just like a two-by-four between the eyes," the Blizzard of *B2 really let us have it! God really got our attention. In frustration and helplessness, we were knocked to our knees for a long eight count. I would like to share with you some of the valuable lessons we stand to learn from it all. The cold and wind were more than offset by the warmth of human kindness and helpfulness that was seen everywhere. It was amazing to see men bound together out of a common sense of urgency and need. The Blizzard of’B2 taught us that our need for each other and our capacity to respond to that need is just as real as ever. 1 believe also that the Blizzard of 82 reminded us of our own finiteness. It was a humiliating experience. While it brought out the best in many of us. it also reminded us of the limits of human resources. It was aweinspiring to see God’s nature bring even our most sophisticated machinery to a virtual standstill. I believe that God used the Blizzard of 82 to remind us that we are not as tough as we think we are. From time to time God finds it necessary to allow certain things to come our way to remind us who we are. It is very easy for us to get a big head. We are a nation of power. We have money. We have machines We have men. And we have more than anyone else. We are invincible. Nothing

can stop us! Our illusion of greatness seems to know no end. Well, God did a good job in bursting our bubble. He reminded us that “the nations are likea drop from a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales... It is He who sits above the vault of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers" (Isaiah 40:15, 22). We had it coming, woukta’t you say? How carelessly we lose sight of our finiteness before the majestic power and wisdom of the God off all creation. It is the greatest of errors to place final trust and confidence in our own power and resources. The Bible puts it this way, "The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; ... The king is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength" (Psalm 33:13-17). While God grants us technological advances to help provide for the welfare and convenience of all mankind. He does not want us to place such a faith in these things that would cause us to think we can make it alone and we don't need Him anymore. In life, and in death, our rehl source of power comes froiq God "He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might he increases power . . those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings tike eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary” (Isaiah 40:28:31 >.
