Lakeland School Corporation's only driver training instructor, down from eight instructors last year. Is the driver braining program doomed, to be relegated to the scrap heap? it’s a question that is worth asking as questions arise as to its value. Insurance Institute dents driver education program
If the Lakeland School Corporation Vohmteer Advisory Committee b in earnest about their mandate to get the most for the dollar spent for education, here's something they certainly will want to look into The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claims high school driver education increases rather than reduces the accident rate among teen agers Their report was commented on in a page l article in the Saturday. Nov 28. issue of the Tampa Tribune, under the byline of staff writer Fat ti Breckenndge She wrote. As a result, the institute proposes eliminating high school driver education programs across the country " Reporter Breckenndge said if earned out. Hillsborough County <Tampa> would save at least sS2o.oot> a year — the cost of dnver education in their public schools The impact of Miss Breckenrtdges report is such that we feel it should be reported here in full The reason dnver education boosts the accident rate is because it substantially increases the number of 16- and 17 year-olds with dnver's licenses without reducing the number of accidents among teenagers, according to a new il-page report called “Teens and Autos: A Deadly Combination “ The report was prepared by the insurance institute —a national, independent. non-profit

Robert Auer resigns from Milford Town Board
By TERRI CHILCOTE The Milford Town Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Trustee Bob Auer at its regular meeting Tuesday evening, Dec 8. . In his letter of resignation. Brakes put on student drivers The Lakeland School Corporation, faced with decreased funds, is already taking steps to eliminate much of the cost of its driver training program and yet let it remain intact. * According to assistant superintendent George Gilbert, last year the program employed eight teachers and cost approximately $43,460. of which $12,915 was funded There was zero funding for the summer of 1981 He noted that most of eight instructors were high on the teacher salary scale as well. Under this year s program there is no federal funding, and so the program has been cut to one instructor. Robin Hanson, who is employed as a full time driver training instructor. His salary: » $13,320. Last year the summer program had 180 students and this year there are only 102 students. Students cannot drive behind the wheel until they reach their 15th birthday, says Mr. Gilbert, cause for the decreased enrollment in the program. The $20,000 budgeted for the program this year breaks down as follows: $13,320 for instructors salary; $1,200 for car rental; S6OO for insurance; $2,000 for gas and oil; $250 for ment; and SI,OOO for maintenance. Each student tn the program is being charged S4O whereas he paid SSO for the summer program in years past Students must have 30 hours of classroom study, six hours of observation time and six hours behind the wheel. Mr Gilbert said the program this year would coincide with the school year, but may run over several weeks into the summer months He calls the program as redesigned an improvement over the okl program, inasmuch as students will be learning to drive on ice and snow during the winter months Mr Gilbert is a supporter of the driver training program. Told of the adjoining article, he said he thinks the driver training program a vital and important program and would hale to see it discontinued entirely.
