Entry to the 12th annual tournament opened Monday, Oct. 5, and closes October 19. Elkhart Central downs Wawasee girls' swim team

The Wawasee girls’ swim team were defeated by Elkhart Central, 111-81, Tuesday, Oct. 6. In the 200 medley relay, Wawasee’s Jennifer Darr. Jenni Patty, Michelle Berkey and Susie Schmucker had a time of 2:08.95, followed by Chris McDaniel, Mary Walgamuth, Greta Hurd and Susan Payne with 2:2512. Tatia Littleton, Chris Richards, Gina Hurd and Teresa Boyer had a time of 2:53.88. In the 200 freestyle. Wawasee’s Lori Staley came in second with a 2:22.93 time. Brenda Messenger placed fourth with a 2:27.87 time and Sherri Smith placed sixth in 2:45.22. Jennifer Darr captured first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.26. Mary Walgamuth placed fifth in 2:57.31 and Greta Hurd placed sixth in 2:58.26 Capturing first place in the 50 r freestyle was Susie Schmucker in 27:20 Coming in fifth and sixth were Susan Payne in 31:31 and Elise Gans in 34:21. Cross country team seeks NIC title

The Wawasee Warrior cross country team is nearing the close of the season. The boys’ team posts a record of 9-4 in dual meets while the girls’ team is 6-0 in dual meets with three invitational championships. At the Manchester Invitational Saturday, Oct. 3. the girls’ team took first place with 38 points against 17th ranked Manchester who had 123 points and 20th ranked Fort Wayne Wayne with 130 points. There were approximately 20 other teams competing in the invitational. Setting a new course record and establishing a new relayrecord was Stacy Wall who finished first in'the time of 11:16. Other plaqngs for , the Warriorettes included Tonda Yeager, sixth, 11:33; Sonia Melendez, eigth, 11:58; Shelia Kleinrichert, 10th, 12:00; and Carol Walker. 12.12:08. Times for the other Warriorette runners are: Carla Clouse, 12:37; Amy Clouse, 12.42; Cheryl Walker. 13:57; Sylvia Hernandez. 14:14; and Rosalie Rouch. 14:45. Goshen Invitational At the Goshen Invitational Wednesday, Sept. 30. Wawasee took first place with 29 points against Goshen’s 60 points for second place. Berkey came in fourth in 1:15.00 followed by Greta Hurd in fifth place with a 1:22.71 time. Susie Schmucker captured second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.01. Taking fourth place was Jenni Patty with a 1:02.56 time. Brenda Messenger came in sixth in 1:08.32. In the 500 freestyle, Lori Staley came in thi~' in 6:25.41 while Susan Payne came in fifth in 7:13.22 and Gina Hurd in sixth in 7:18.71. Jennifer Darr placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.19 In fifth and sixth spots were Chris McDaniel in 1:21.29 and Lisa Haney in 1:26.91. Wawasee claimed first and second places in the 100 breaststroke with Jenni Patty’s time of 1:18.95 and Michelle Berkey’s time of 1:22.28 Mary Walgamuth placed fourth with a 1:24 53 time. In the 400 freestyle relay, Sherri Smith, Lori Staley, Brenda Messenger and Chris McDaniel placed third. Also placing for Wawasee were Gina Hurd. Elise Gans, Chris Richards and Lisa Haney. The next Wawasee girls’ swim meet is at Concord Thursday. Oct. 8. at 6:30p.m.

Northridge. West Noble and Rochester had entries, but not enough for a team score. Boys Finish Fourth The Warrior boys’ track team did not compete at the Goshen Invitational but did compete at the Manchester Invitational and finished fourth. The top runners for Wawasee were. Kirk Stichter, 12th, 16:30; Jerry Auer, 13th, 16:35; Fred Cone. 27th, 16:52; Kevin Blade, 33rd. 17:02; Scot Badskey, 36th, 17:10. Other times for Warrior runners are: Mike Hernandez, 17:41; and Mike Ballinger, 17:55. Both teams will compete in the Northern Lakes Conference meet on Thursday for the NLC championship at Plymouth. The girls meet will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the reserves at 5 p.m. and the boys ats:3o p.m. Cross Country Coach Jerry Minton stated that if Wawasee wins and Warsaw places second there will be a tie for the NLC championship.

Goshen,Warsaw victorious

The Wawasee freshman football team was defeated by Goshen and Warsaw in recent games. The Warriors faced a 14-12 defeat against Goshen on September 24 and a 194) defeat against Warsaw on Thursday, Oct.l. In the Warsaw game the Tigers scored in the first quarter and two times in the second quarter making only one of the kicked extra points. There was no scoring in the fourth quarter. Against Goshen the Warriors tied the game up at 6-6 when Todd Waltz threw an eight-yard pass to Kevin Tracy in the first quarter. Goshen had scored earlier in the match. The defense was “alive and well,” but the offense failed to score. Coach Matz was pleased with the fan support, over 35 made the trip.
