Food alert Purdue University is recommending that persons who canned or froze zucchini pineapple this year not use the product until more testing can be done Many area residents became concerned by an AP news release from Michigan State University, published last week by many newspapers, stating zucchini pineapple should be thrown out because of botulism, a potentially deadly food poisoning. A call to the county extension office revealed the fact there is concern and Purdue University too is running tests. Purdue's recommendation is that the product not be used until additional information is released. There may be a real potential food problem after three months storage. It is not known why the botulism appears in the food. Officials warn the product should not be tasted since invisible botulism organisms are odorless and tasteless Pat Rathbum of the Kosciusko County Extension Office stated this morning the recipe used at Purdue University and the one used at Michigan State University were not the same This is one of the reasons Purdue is urging people not to open cans but to hold on to them and not throw them out until the tests can be completed. Persons wanting to help with the test are urged to send unopened jars to Purdue University. Include your name, address, the recipe used, processing procedure and the date processed. Send the jars and information to the following address: Dr. Jean Howe Extention Specialist Stone Hall Purdue University West Lafayette.
