BASEBALL ‘ ’ * By Pete Fritkhie WASHINGTON. D. C. - Major League baseball clubs might soon consider how they could play ball without unionized players--after their agreement expires. It would be difficult, perhaps impossible, but if there’s no agreement that suits owners by 1983. there s always the possibility, that the clubs could bring up Minor League, players and sign others who were not members of the present union, which has disrupted Major League play for years now. Court action, of course, would be taken to halt the dubs from hiring others and freezing out the union, and an involved legal battle would result. But that’s no worse than what the clubs

FROM THE MAIL BAG One of the most-often-asked questions when 1 speak at a seminar is: “How do you find bass on a lake you've never fished before?” Well, first you’ve got to keep in mind the kinds of cover bass live in, like: weedbeds, lily pads, brush, flooded timber, reeds, overhanging trees, riprap, rocky shore bordering deep water, bridge abutments, piers, etc. I just cruise around the lake looking for such cover and fishing it with a variety of lures. I use a variety because you can’t ever be sure what ol" mister bass wants at any time of day. That goes for his old lady. too. So, I let the

have been facing. There are two sides to every dispute, but it’s clear that today’s baseball players have the best arrangement among all sports pros. They have become pampered and spoiled, and overpaid, as a result of Marvin Miller’s clever organizing and negotiating ability. Has Miller pushed them too far? Or have they just become too greedy, too uncaring, in this, the me generation? Whatever, millions of baseball fans are utterly disgusted with today’s striking players, who really shouldn’t mind clubs being reimbursed fairly—which is in the interest of the game. That would still leave Major League player* very w ell off-with their ninemonth jobs.
bass tell me by offering it a buffet of lures. 1 give them ten casts with each one. I may begin by teasing a topwater lure, like one with a spinner at the tail, near shore cowr. Thea, I switch to a floating-diving hire. Next a sinking spinner type, like Little George, at various depths. Then I wind up nudging the bottom with a jellyworm. One or the other usually works! BRER TOM’S CLOSING TIP: Keep your hooks sharp, podnuh. It takes a good point to penetrate the jaws of most fish. I recommend using a good, fine-grain file and dressing the hook point until it bites easily into your thumbnafl.
