Jim Mills breaks 3 hours in Three Rivers Marathon
Seven Lakeland area distance runners competed Sunday in the TV-33 Hooks Three Rivers Marathon in Fort Wayne. The race began at 7 a m. in a light drizzle in front of the Memorial Coliseum with 797 competitors toeing the start line. A total of 677 soggy runners finished the course. Those crossing the finish line in over three hours were soaked in a late morning downpour Setting a personal record and breaking three hours for the first time was Jim Mills of Syracuse. Mills ran the 26 mile. 385 yard course in two hours and 56 minutes.
Rotary Roadapple Run August 1 in Nappanee

Also competing from Syracuse were Tony Clouse. Ralph Bushong and Jim Garner. Clouse finished the race in 3:11, Bushong in 3:12 and Garner in 3:27. Participating from Milford were Homer Miller and Ron Baumgartner. Baumgartner finished in 3:23. Del Acton of Winona Lake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Acton of Milford, completed his first attempt at the marathon distance in 3:54. Betty Hite. North Webster, regarded by Three Rivers race authorities as a top contender in the women’s division, was unable to participate in the event.

Trophies will be given to first place winners in all divisions of the 3.1 mile tun and the 9.3 mile run A trophy will be given to the overall winner of each race. July 27. at 6 p m The Olympic freestyle wrestling is in the high school age group with Gary Gerencser. a local qualifier, scheduled to compete with the 30-man team, for the second time. Gerencser. to be a WHS senior this fall, will compete in the 114'2 pound class Last year he qualified at 105 pounds. Other area qualifiers are Scott Hutcherson. Warsaw, and TraceyBailey. Goshen, both at 123 pounds The two all-star teams will travel to lowa City, lowa, for the National Federation Wrestling Meet at the University of lowa July 28 to August 1. Overman number one in hall of fame Vic Overman, husband of the former Suzanne Rapp, the daughter of Mrs. Joe (Ruth) Rapp, formerly of Syracuse, now of Brownsburg a..u the late Joe Rapp, was inducted into the Indiana High School Football Hall of Fame on June 27 During this time he was voted number one man. He is a former teacher and football coach at Mishawaka High School and recently re bred as head football coach at Brownsburg High School, Brownsburg. Overman will continue teaching at Brownsburg. The ceremony was in conjunction with the Richmond Rose Festival, Richmond Overman received a photograph of himself. an honor plaque and the record wrhich goes into the hall of fame. The Overmans have several children and grandchildren. They reside in Brow nsburg The Indiana High School Football Hall of Fame began in 1890
Camelot Ski Team splits forces, attends 3 meets
The Camelot Ski Team split its forces and attended three different tournaments this past Bill Ruddell skied at the Oppo Ski Tournament held at Bass Lake. He took first in slalom, second in jump and third in tricks, all in the boys’ division. Jane and Jill Tully attended the Spartan Open at Lansing. Mich. Jane took first in slalom, tricks, jump and overall, in the girls' division. She jumped her longest jump to date of 95 feet. Her sister. tricks and first overall. Jill jumped 100 feet which qualified her for the Nationals set for August 19 to 23. The Clark Smith family attended a tournament at " Vincennes. Brad skis in junior boys’ and received a first in tricks, second in jump, tricks and overall. Todd skis in the boys’ division and got a first in jump, third in slalom and second in tricks and overall. This week the Camelot Ski team will attend the state tournament, to be held on the river in Mishawaka, July 24 through 26.
