Mart Moore and Scott Miller crossed the finish line first in their respective races as a total at 222 runners Took part in the Fourth Annual Mail-Journal Flotilla Road Race Saturday morning. July 4. The race began at 9 a m from the Syracuse Lakeside Park. There were 143 runners taking the 3.3 mile course while 79 runners went the full eight miles Predicted showers held off the entire week end although humidity and temperatures were high and many of the runners felt their effects as they made their trtk around the course State Senator John B. Augsburger started the race which sent runners up W E. Long Drive A short 17 minutes after the race started runners on the short course began to cross the finish line The last eight mile course finisher came in one hour, 20 minutes and 46 seconds after the start In the 3 3 mile run Mark Moore crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 10 seconds. For the ladies, first to cross the line was Becky Babcock m 22 minutes and 53 seconds The eight mile run. which took runners around Syracuse Lake, had Scott Miller come across the finish line first with a time of 43 minutes and 45 seconds For the ladies it was Betty Hite with a time of 52 minutes and 13 seconds Last year Mrs Hite was the first women in on the eight mile course in 60 minutes and 30 seconds Plaques were presented to 77 winners, m categories for both men and women Among the runners were a number at Lakeland School officials and employees and Clifford Boyer. Syracuse Town Board member Members of the school corporation administrative and teaching staff also helped with race registration and finishing activities Also appearing was the Wawasee High School Jazz Band, under the direction of David Blackwell The band provided musical entertainment for spectators and participants The Kosciusko County Red Cross personnel was on hand to distribute soft drinks and water to runners and the Syracuse City Police Department and Kosciusko County Police Department helped out by petroling the routes and handling the traffic A tag thank goes to Carl Meditch. Henry Smith and the Lakeland School Corporation administrative and teaching staff plus the numerous others who helped make the Fourth Annual Mail-Journal Road Race a tremendous success Individual Results Individual results follow far the 3 3 mile race They are listed with their time. Kane. 50. ran the eight-miie course in 62.22 and Randall. 64. ran the eight mile course in 68.46. Both runners improved from last year’s time of 66.48 and 71.52 respectively.
