’Labor of Love' gives stained glass windows to Saint Andrew's Church

By DEB FOX Their work has been titled as “labor of love." by members of the Saint Andrew.’s United Methodist Church congregation in Syracuse Jan Keim and Chris Ciodfelter donated their talents and time to the church by making 13 stained glass windows for the sanctuary The whole concept of stained glass window's for the church was initiated by Rev. Phil Frew, pastor of .the church He in stigated the project over one year ago while visiting Mrs Keim She commented he asked her if she would do the church windows Previously the church windows were clear glass The congregation was asked to submit art work they would like to see in the stained glass win dows The worship committee looked at the 20 designs submitted and screened the entries “All we did was interpret it —d the work." commented Mrs Ciodfelter. In explaining how the windows were made. Mrs Keim stated the art work was transferred onto piexyglass by outlining with liquid l* a d This *ould then be left to dry before the color could be put on with eye droppers, using liquid stain. The cost in making the windows has been estimated at S3O-35 each and the money for the project was from donations by church members The colors in each of the window were colors the artists

designed in their plans Mrs Ciodfelter stated she and Mrs Keim made a few adjustments but not many The women also stated they are not sure how long the colors used will last But the window s can be touched up The time spent on one of the simplest windows was guessed at a total of six to eight hours if they could be done in one day The time consuming part of the project was putting on the liquid color and waiting until it dried When the windows were completed they were put on two at a time in the sanctuary “The people kind of enjoyed it that way.” commented Mjrs Keim, who added another reason why the windows were placed as they were completed was because they didn’t want them sitting

around Currently the windows are not a permanent fixture They stated the worship committee will be changing around the designs and plaques will be placed with each window stating who submitted the design. Eventually these windows will become a permanent part of the window. Some of the comments from members of the congregation included: the windows added a sense of worship, they gave a feeling it is more of a church than the plain windows and the people liked the idea it was done by church members. “The rippled windows add to it by making it look like an authentic stained glass windows." commented Mrs. Keim.
