10 YEARS AGO. APRIL 17.1*71 Seth S. Ward, r 1 Syracuse, has been a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis for 50 years. Ward and other members of the class will receive 50-year membership certificates at a luncheon to be held on Saturday, April 17, during the Scottish Rite's spring convocation. Mrs. Mary Ellen Biesemeyer of r 1 Warsaw announced the engagement of her daughter, Karen, to Robert 0. Pilcher son of Mr and Mrs Douglas Pilcher of Syracuse. Karen is a senior at Wawasee high school and employed by Pilcher’s Shoe Store in Syracuse. Her fiance graduated from Syracuse high school and is a senior at Anderson college where he is majoring in physical education. He is currently student teaching at Noblesville junior high school. Principal Sylvester Amsler accepts the county volley ball trophy on behalf of Syracuse High School during a recent assembly program. The trophy was presented by Carl Alfrey, captain of the winning team. This is the second county trophy won by a Syracuse team this season and was presented to the champions when the tournament was played here a few weeks ago. The baseball trophy was the first county championship won by Syracuse during the 1960-61 season. 38 YEARS AGO. Free lunches to needy school children were discontinued Monday last week, as money raised in "cake walks" held at the high school this winter had been used up. Since Jan. 13. 874 free lunches had been served. Work on the South Shore Country Club's 18 hole golf course is getting under way, according to Roy Brown, manager. Dave Brown's farm and 10 acres of Will Mallon; farm have been added to Roy Brown's farm, to be converted into the 18 hole course. Blue grass is being planted and laying out the course will soon start. In an effort to relieve the taxpayers in Kosciusko county, the board of education late Monday adopted a minimum and maximum scale of salaries for county teachers effective for the school year of 1931 and 1932. According to the schedule adopted a saving of approximately ten per cent. $20,000 to $22,000 was made. At the meeting of township trustees held in Warsaw, Monday afternoon, it was decided that sheep killed by dogs will be paid for at the assessed valuation of the sheep as far as possible.
