APRIL 1 Admission Judith A. Rollins of Syracuse Don Byrd did not start fire Don Byrd was incorrectly listed as having started a fire near Johnson’s Bay in an item published in last week’s MailJournal in a quote by Syracuse Fire Chief Kenneth Johnson who stated, “Several calls went out on this. The fire was caused by Don Byrd burning some stuff and it got out of control.” Byrd stated he called in the report about the marsh fire in the area of the Wawasee Golf Course but he did not set the fire, commenting it was started on the railroad tracks and he was worried about it coming out on the golf course property. “I had nothing to do with it,” Byrd said. The golf course owner first called the fire department at 12:38 p.m. other calls are also listed on the log, noting there was a fire burning in the marsh area The department was called to the scene at 4:12 p.m. At that time the fire had progressed into the wooded area behind the Wawasee Golf Course and the north side of the railroad tracks. The tracks, owned by the B and O Railroad, were damaged considerably The Cromwell Fire Department was already on the scene. At 7:46 p.m. the firemen returned to the scene when a NIPSCo pole was on fire. Several small fires were extinguished at this time.
