Tornado season advice from Syracuse Fire Chief

Tornado season is rapidly approaching the area. Syracuse Firp Chief Kenny Johnson released general safety rules concerning tornadoes and specifically, the procedures followed by the Syracuse Fire Department. “Two terms that one should be familiar with are tornado watch and tornado warning.” Chief Johnson stated. A tornado watch means existing weather conditions are those usually associated with tornado formation. A tornado warning is when a tornado or tornadoes have been sighted in a general area. The Syracuse Fire Department broadcasts these two tornado conditions between 6 a m. and 11 p.m. over its base radio, as received by the National Weather Service or local law enforcement, which the public may monitor on a home scanner tuned to the fire department’s frequency. “The Syracuse Fire Department has one additional term used in announcing threatening weather, called Code Red.’ When Code Red is announced ova- the fire frequency, it means a tornado was sighted in the immediate area, or that one has been sighted and is headed in a direct line toward the Turkey Creek Township area." explained Johnson Code Reds are announced over the fire frequency 24 hours daily

and are simply dispatched as ‘Code Red/ In addition, the big Syracuse fire siren blow 12 times (for a fire it blows three times) alerting residents to the immediate danger. “When you hear the siren blow 12 times you should be prepared to take cover immediately in a safe place decided upon beforehand, and listen to an AM radio for further updates,” advised Johnson. , In conclusion, he added, “If you should see funnel-shaped rotating clouds, report them immediately to your local law enforcement agency or fire department so they can be confirmed by an official. If you suspect, but cannot confirm a sighting, report your suspicions. A community working together is our greatest protection against disaster.” If anyone has questions concerning severe weather, the safest place in a particular home, or whatever, contact the Syracuse Fire Department.
