ByG.G. “Good morning. Alfie,” greeted Lem "What may the travel agency do for you today 7 ’ “We are considering the long week end vacation plan with the idea of visiting, several places during the summer," replied Alfie, “and want As few suggestions " “Have you ever considered state parks in Indiana, for instance Our state has six parks, all with full facilities, conveniently located and usually kind to the pocketbook." Lem mentioned for a starter “They offer widely different attractions, from antique riverboats to astronauts and rocketships "Turkey Run State Park near Marshall, is the covered bridge capital of the world Potawatomi State Park near Angola has a 1.700-foot refrigerated twin slide. McCormick's Creek State Park is carved up by gullies, sink holes and tumbling waterfalls Brown County State Park with its 15.500 acres includes a limestone cave, an amphitheater, and 400 different wild flowers. Cliffy' Falls State Park overlooks riverboats and tow boats floating along the Ohio River. And Spring Mill State Park has a reconstructed pioneer village alongside a memorial to Virgil Grisson, America’s second man in space." "Tell me more about Spring Mill State Park.” Alfie requested. “Located on Highway 00 near Mitchell, this 1.300-acre state park presents powerfid historical and environmental contrasts Guests can take guided canoe trips into Donaldson and Twin Caves where blind fish silently glide through underground streams and bump into your boats." Lem told him. "There isa pioneer cemetery and just down the way from this is Spring Mill Village, a village of restored tog structures including an apothecary shop, post office, hat
of near Our Town with a sheepshead caught at the north jetty on a sand flea. In all. Rarick caught six fish that weighed. 36 pounds. In an accompaning news item mention is made of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Eisenhour of Milford, who buy their bait shrinrip at Port Hole They have been catching whiting and mangrove snapper —o— THE NEXT few weeks are going to be very busy at the Christian Church with the annual Ladies' Rally set for this coming Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. And. on April 10, 11 and 12. a preaching rally wilbbe held at the church with speakers to include Ed Genes, author of the Speaking Words of Wisdom column which runs weekly in this paper. Song leaders will be Mr. and Mrs Rick Brouillette of Goshen Brouillette is a former youth minister of the church More on this next week. ° . —oANOTHER NOTE on John Hannah that area residents may be interested in is the fact that he met Dave Wollman. Wawasee High School graduate and an assistant football coach at Concord, while in the area Dave is expected to go to the Dallas Cowboys' rookie camp this year. Johri encouraged Dave to try out and to get a try -out with the Patriots. He noted Dave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wollman Dewart Lake, is big enough to play pro football. Who knows, maybe Dave will make the Patriots or the Cowboys!
shop, distillery and. of course, a tavern" “On the other side of the park is the Virgil 1 Grissom Memorial, a tribute to the Hoosier spaceman Visitors can listen to a taped conversation between ’Gus’ Grissom and ground control during his historical lift-off in 1965. There is also a six-foot replica of the earth in realistic bas-relief which rotates representing our planet as seen from UFOs.” “The facilities for visitors at this park including the Spring Mill Inn with 75 guest rooms. 16 of which are in a new wing. All are beautifully furnished and equipped with phone an ’ television Also, there are cabins. And the restaurant serves three meals a day." “The variety of interest here should make for a full two or three day week end. longer if you preferred. Each park in Indiana has much to offer in the way of attractions and things to do. For added variety in making your plans, remember our neighboring states of Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky which have state parks with much historical interest along with recreational opportunities and natural phenomena.” “And to go a little farther." continued Lem. "one of the most unusual state parks in the country is the Ozark Folk Center in north central Arkansas, owned by the nearby town of Mountain View and operated by the state department of parks and tourism. Instead of the outdoor activities that many parks feature, this one is dedicated to the preservation of music, art, and 'cabin crafts' as handed down through the ages by the mountain folk of the Ozarks." "We could be busy all summer with this variety of vacation opportunities." Alfie decided. "We will tab this over and be back with you for more details and to make plans."
