'What accusation do you bring ...
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death, and they bound him and led him away and delivered him to Pilate the governor. (Matthew 27:1-2 RVS) Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted And they had then a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you. Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?" For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much over him today in a dream (Matthew 27 15 19) So Pilate went out to them and said. "What accusation do you bring against this man?" They answered him. "If this man were not an evildoer we would not have handed him over " Pilate said to them, "Take him your selves and judge him by your own

law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death." This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show by what death he was to die. Pilate entered the praetorium again and cafled Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered. "Do you say this of your own .accord, or did others say it to you about me?" Pilate answered. "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me, what have you done?" Jesus answered, My kingship is not of this world, if my kingship were gs this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jewsr but my kingship is not from the world." Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered. "You say that I am a king For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth Every one who is of the truth hears my voice " Pilate said to him, What is truth?" After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "1 find no crime in him But you have a custom that I

should release one man for you at the Passover; will you have me release for you the King of the Jews?" They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber. Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe; they came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands Pilate went out again, and said to them, "Behold. I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him." So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe Pilate said*to them. "Here is the man!" When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out. Crucify him. crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him. for I find no crime in him The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die. because he has made himself the Son of God
By REV. HENRY McCRAY Associate Pastor Church of God As I think back, it had been a terrible day and 1 was in a rotten mood I didn’t relish at all the thought of rising before daybreak to "try” a case. Especially a case brought to me by the Jews! They were such a difficult, turbulent people. It seemed like we were forever trying to keep the lid on a smoldering volcano Jewish religion!! Ugh!! I’ve seen many religions — in Egypt and Persia, through Asia Minor and Macedonia — and they are all alike None of them or their prayers or their mystic rites can stand up aganist a single Roman Legion’ Nou that’s something you can really put your faith in!! Those religious Jews baffled me — more, they irritated me! They were so illogical and absurd! Take that morning for example They had some "ceremonial objections" to treading the stones of the Gentiles palace. They claimed it would make them unclean for the passover So. not only did I have to get up extra early, but 1 also had to leave the warmth of the palace and go out into the cold night air and listen to their crazy babblings I Anyway./as I walked out into the damp darkness I was met by a seething mass of humanity that seemed centered around one solitary man who was being thrust forward My first impression was that this man was perfectly harmless

When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?" Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from atjove; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin." Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar." When Pilate heard these words, he brought^ Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Here is your King!" They cried out.
As a trained officer, I remember looking him over first for a sign of weapons ... there were none. He was dressed in a simple oncewhite robe, now wrinkled and soiled from rough handling. His hands were bound behind his back My second thought was to look for confederate" or friends of the prisoner who may be seeking vengeance However, there was none I distinctly remember the crowd looking and acting like a pack of snarling animals. I asked them, "What accusation bring ye against this man?” Their reply was insolent . . "If he were not an evil-doer we should not have delivered him up tothee" 1 looked once again at the prisoner. An evil-doer? If I was any judge of men — and I prided myself on that — this man was no vicious character "Take him away," I told them. "Take him away and deal with him according to your own law.” A veritable howl went up and I found out what they were after — "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.” The blood-lust was in their eyes I had seen the same look in many of our gladiators ' I hesitated and once more looked over the prisoner. He was the only one that had a calm face in a seething sea — and what a face it was! There was something in his eyes .. in the set of his mouth . . . something about his very bieng that was different — strange — compelling.

"Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your kifig?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." Then he handed him over to them tn be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.' " Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written.” (John 18:29 40, 19:1-22)

An instinctive desire came to me to get away from the crowd, to be alone with this man and speak with him face to face. So I commanded that the prisoner be brought before me in the palace. The first few mintues of our meeting contained nothing but silence, a cherished sound after experiencing the unruly s mob outside. Then I asked him pointblank: “Are you the King of the Jews?” A faint smile came over his face as he responded, "Sayest thou this of thyself or did others tell it thee concerning me?” It was the first time that I had heard the man’s voice. He went on. “My Kingdom is not of this world; if my Kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jewsi but iny Kingdom is not from hence.” I probed further, "Thou art a King then?” He nodded and said. “To this end have I been bom. that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.” I now fully realized that this man was harmless, and I reported my findings to the Jews. Well, that really brought on a explosion! The chief priests were more angry than ever as they yelled their accusations: "He stirreth up the people He teacheth throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place...” Galilee! That’s it! The loophole I had been looking for. "Send this prisoner to Herod”, I commanded, “I cannot try this case.

Galilee is not my jurisdiction, " I took pride in my cunning decision. However, it didn’t take Herod long to see through my trickery, and all too soon the stenching mob had returned howling all the louder for the prisoner’s death. By this time, my wife was even in on the act with a bit of advice of her own: “Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things in a dream because of him.” Even though her interference upset me. still, throughout the years, I had learned to respect her feminine intuition. I spoke again to the Jews and re-stated the fact that neither I or Herod could find fault with this man; and therefore I would chastize him and let him go That’s when the whole multitude burst into shouting: “Away with him? Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Prompted by the priests, they kept shouting: "Crucify ... Crucify ... Crucify. I tried to quiet them and talk some sense into their thick heads, but I could scarcely make myself heard "Would you have me crucify your "We have no King but Caesar." they retorted. I only nad one trick left up my sleeve: “I know it is your custom to have a man released at your Festival. We have two prisoners for you tq consider. First, there is the murdering, theiving Barabbus. (Who has brought much sorrow to many of our lives.) Second, it this ‘Jesus’. There is nothing in this Jesus that

UMW to observe the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial
This week the United Methodist Women of New Paris, Island Chapel and Milford United Methodist Churches will hold one of their most important annual observances — the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. The program will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at the Milford United Methodist Church. Major events of the observance include the quiet day and descriptions of the mission projects for which a special offering is given. The women’s division of the general board of global ministries of the United Methodist Church sponsors the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. "Children: Advocacy and Ministry ' is the theme for giving this year. In the United States, the offering may be used for projects such as a center in a women's prison where inmates may care for their own children at that time, an integrated day
deserves death. If you like, in honor of your custom. I will set this man free.” But their hate was deeper than I ever imagined. "Barabbas, we want Barabbas! We want Barabbas! We want Barabbas! .. .” And the Caiaphas added: “Any man who sets himself up as a King is a rebel against Caesar .’’ In other words, if my actions didn’t please Caiaphas. he would make certain Caesar understood I was encouraging rebellion against Rome. Finally. I had taken all I could take! I couldn’t even be heard above their death chants. So I chose to deliberately dramatize my personal feelings. A servant brought me a basin of water and a towel. I slowly washed and then dried my hands. Meanwhile, the tumult had gradually died and I was able to give my final statement: "I am innocent of the blood of this just man See ye to it!” The blood-thrist Jews responded; "His blood can be on us and our children." I shuddered involuntarily. Their poor children!! Well. I had tried . . all I could tell Claudia wag that I had tried. A cruxifiction is never a pleasant experience and especially so when you know the man is innocent. I chose not to witness the terrible event; but even yet today, I can still here the hammer hitting those spikes, and I can still see those life-changing eyes.

Examples of projects from other countries which may receive support include a training program for deaf children in Hong Kong, new facilities for mentally retarded children in Chile, community mental health projects in Nigeria, “rescue centers” which provide education and job training for destitute children in Nairobi. Kenya, day care centers which also provide health and dental care for poor families in Santiago, Chile, equipment and teaching materials for Southern African children’s refugee centers in Tanzania, or medical equipment and supplies for mother-and-child care centers in Palestinian refugee camps. The service for the quiet day, Os Such Is the Kingdom', was written by Ann Rader Pfisterer. The service focuses on children, their needs and qualities, and suggests several child-like qualities necessary for those who would receive and enter the kingdom of God such as love, dependency, sharing and giving. About 1.5 million women, in 33.000 local units in all 50 states will join in the observance. Last year, the offering totaled $829,209. an increase of $14,048 over the previous year.
