Warsaw Tiger basketball team has the “Sweet 16" disease as they head toward the semistate action Saturday, March 21. against Fort Wayne Wayne in the opener at 11, a m. in the Fort Wayne Coliseum Warsaw won the regional title Saturday evening by defeating W’hitko in the Elkhart Regional The Tigers defeated the Wildcats 58-55. giving Warsaw its second regional title in two years Milford's gymnasts defeated Milford's gymnasts were defeated in their first meet of the year by an undefeated West Noble team last Monday. March 2 The final score was 89 1 to 87 0 Milford swept the tumbling event with Heidi Beer taking first place with 7.7; Suellen Free placing second with 7 3 and Irma Cruz placing third with 6 8. Jacqui Schultz placed second on the bah nee beam Irma took first m floor exercises with a score of 8 3 Two of our girls did their uneven bars routines. Suellen tied for first with 8.3 and Heidi scored a 7 5 Everyone did a super job in their first meet of the year

Warsaw has won six regional championship, three in the last six years Ron Brandenburg, who scored 28 points, including six crucial free throws in the final two minutes and 16 seconds of play, was the leading scorer and seems to be the hero of the game He is a 5 foot. 10 inch senior and averages more than 26 points a game, hit nine of 16 shots and added 10 of 14 free throws to finish the regional tournament with 53 points He gave Warsaw the lead for good at 54-53 on two free throws with 2:16 left, then, iced the game with a pair of free throw’s at the 57-and 26-second marks before Tom Moffitt of Whitko scored a meaningless late goal for his team Argos — Memorial Eliminated In the afternoon session, Warsaw knocked out 18th ranked Elkhart Memorial, 80-75, when fans saw Brandenburg and Eric Sebo put 47 points on the board. Sebo had 22 and Brandenburg 25. Inrebounds the pair had 28. eight and' 20 respectively; and 13 assists, six and seven respectively Brandenburg, who is a contender for all state honors, missed four free throws, but Sebo offset it by making 10 shots in a row. including six on one and one situations in the final stanza Warsaw trailed 23-16 with nine seconds left in the second period

and gained the upper hand after the half The Tigers didn’t trail again throughout the remaining 18 minutes of the action Scorers for Warsaw in the afternoon game were: Monty Bolinger, 13; Mike Bradford, eight; John Snyder, eight; Sebo, 22; Brent Messmore, four. Warsaw had 13 turnovers during the game to Memorial’s 10. W’hitko defeated the Argos Dragons. 63-60, in the first game of the regional action. Whitko was 21-2 going into the match up against Argos who was 24-0. Evening Match An evening crowd of 6.235 watched in Northside gym after a sellout of 8.248 fans had witnessed the daytime session. Warsaw committed only eight turnovers chiring the game while Whitko committed 16. Tigers jumped to a 20-10 lead with 5 33 left in the first half, making some key offensive rebounds and fooling Whitko with its defense. Whitko had seven first-quarter turnovers which the Tigers took advantage of. By the third quarter with 3:45 left. Whitko (inally took the lead for the first time at 35-34. but Warsaw gained the upper hand on another pair of Brandenburg free throws a minute later and » led 44-41 at the end of the quarter During the final period there were six lead changes and the Tigers missed four straight free

Whitko. tossed in a pair at the 4:20 mark putting Whitko on top, 49-48 Warsaw regained the lead at 3:05 left in the game At 2:29 King hit from the baseline for that last Wildcat lead setting the stage for Brandenburg’s foul-line performance that boosted the Tigers to a 12-for-19 effort to cancel Whitko’s edge of two field goals Warsaw’s defense was attributed as one of the reasons opponents don’t get to the foul line too often. With 14 seconds left, Whitko’s King fouled out. Warsaw scorers for the evening bout were: Bolinger, 10; Bradford, six; Snyder, six; Sebo. eight; Brandenburg, 28 Snyder was the only player for Warsaw to foul out. Following the W’arsaw-Wayne battle, third-ranked Marion (232) will play seventh ranked Valparaiso, also 23-2.
Bohnstedt, Beer receive firsts
Two Wawasee High School girls. Sharon Bohnstedt and Heather Beer, received firsts in al! competing gymnastics categories at the home meet against Westview on March 5. In beginners. W’HS scored 81.55 against Westview s 67.35 Sharon Bohnstedt won first in every event, including: bars, beams, vault, floor and all-around.

JUNIOR HIGH INVITATIONAL — Suellen Free is one of the Milford Junior High gymnasts who will be competing in the Junior High Invitational. Saturday. March 14, at Wawasee High School. The events will begin at 10 a.m. and last until the afternoon, with no lunch break. Other schools, outside of the Lakeland School competing will be West Noble School Corporation. Lakeland (LaGrange) School Corporation and East Noble School Corporation. There m ill be ribbons given to the six top places and a team trophy given to the team with the highest team score. Milford gymnasts defeat Westview
Milford’s gymnasts rolled to an 89.7 to 75.5 victory oyer visiting Westview on Wednesday evening. March 4. Milford swept the tumbling event with Irma Cruz placing first with 7.8; Suellen Free placing second with 7.4; Heidi Beer placing third with 7.2: and Rhonda Amsden placing fourth with 6.0. On the balance beam Suellen Free placed first with a score of 8.7; Heidi placed second with 8.1 and Irma placed fourth with 7.7. < In the floor exercise Irma tpok first with 8.0; Heidi took fourth. Kathy Weisser and Steff Swihart were also figured into team score. AU the girls who competed did a super job. In the boys’ competition Anthony Beer took first in tumbling with 6.9 and second in vaulting with 7.8.
