North Webster Library receives special book
The North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Library has recently received a book of special interest to the area. The book, donated by the author, Elisabeth Hamilton Friermood, is an autobiographyj entitled, “Frier and Elisabeth”. The inscription “In memory ot one-time resident, Etta Hale Hamilton, a Hoosier who deeply appreciated her North Webster neighbors”, refers to the author's mother In the book she tells the story of her life sh Marion where her father. Burr Hamilton, was the fire chief. 9 Elisabeth Friermood attended Northwestern University, later becoming children s librarian and story teller at the Marion Library. After her marriage to Harold Friermood she wrote many popular children’s books for Doubleday Press, all with Hoosier backgrounds Elisabeth and her husband. ‘Frier’, had an interesting life He was National Director of Y.M.C.A. Physical Education and Sports Fner was influential in getting volleyball, a YMCAinvented game, placed on the Olympic's program They traveled extensively and met manv famous athletes, authors, coaches, educators, librarians and ordinary lovable folk The author's brother. University. Later he went to Honolulu as president of the University of Hawaii. There is a Thomas Hale Hamilton Library there, dedicated in 1970. In it hangs an oil portrait of Tom Hamilton. In relating the circumstances of her mother’s death the Author writes."Two days before we were to leave for Toms installation as President of N.Y.U. Etta's neighbor, a nurse (Evelyn Mock), called to say that Etta had been taken to the hospital a mild heart attack She, had not wanted them to notify Tom or me, but requested that I go to the inauguration and give her a full . report. I called her doctor and he advised me not to come to Indiana right then, that I’d be needed more when she returned from the hospital So it was with a heavy heart that I went to Albany, N.Y < “Tw'o weeks later, the evening of November 15. 1959, Tom and I met in New York city and took the train west to Indiana. Our Etta had died that morning “In her little house in the village of North Webster (across from the Telephone Co.) we spent the next four days reminiscing about her ; all the good things she had given us, her behef in hard work toward worthy goals, her firm hand with discipline, and the sense of humor she instilled in us. making it easy for us to laugh at ourselves "

Kaylon Brown assisted the hostess. Devotions were given by Mrs. Brown. Her topic was. “Faith Is .The Key To Heaven." Carol Robbins discussed gun safety. It was announced that the bake sale proceeds were donated to Jan Rager. A donation was also made to 4-H member Doug Baker who is planning a trip,overseas. The lesson, “New Sewing Tips" was presented by Mrs. Robbins New officers were nominated. They are: Connie Crawford — president Jane Demske — vice president Gail Martin — secretary Mrs Robbins — treasurer Gloria Brubaker — song leader Pam Meyers — garden leader Mrs. Barker — health and safety Marlene Baker — citizenship Mrs. Brown — cultural arts. The new officers will be installed at the June meeting. Paula Adkins was a guest. Mrs. Demske will be hostess for the March meeting. Corrine Staples new president of Charm, Chatter Carrie Switzer led group singing of “When Irish Eyes ? Are Smiling” during the opening of the March 2 meeting of Charm And Chatter Club. . The meeting was held at the home of Marjorie Warner with Laverne Clutter assisting. Devotions were given by Carol Ritchie. She read three poems. Lunetta Metcalf read . a selection from a book of prize winning essays. It pertained to pot pies andd other foods peculiar to specific areas. It was noted that Christine Hunt, Helen Cline and Kathy Lock, daughter of Olive Lock, have been ill. The club constitution was read and corrections suggested. It will be corrected and voted on at a 1 later meeting Mrs Clutter gave the lesson. “New Sewing Tips.”

They are: Corrine Staples — president Dorothy Baumlee — vice president Mrs. Switzer — secretary Susie Ward — treasurer Colleen Bryant received the door prize.* Dorothy Snoke and Eleanor Leinsetter were welcomed as nrwmembers. Virginia Osburn explained how to plant flower and garden seeds indooro for transplanting at a later time. A special lesson on how to make burlap flowers will be given at the April meeting by Vergie Jemigan. Mrs. Switzer will be hostess for the April meeting. 'New Sewing Tips' for Sedirist 65 Club The lesson,. “New Sewing Tips," was given by Laura Custer during the March 4 meeting of Sechrist Sixty-Five Extension Homemakers Club. The ladies met in the home of Janet Allen with Dixie Pryor assisting the hostess. Devotions were given by Norma Boyer. Roll call response was, "My Favorite House Plants. ” Mrs. Pryor led group singing of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”

The lesson, “New Sewing Tips” was given by Mrs. Custer. Early garden planning and planting theme Early garden planning and planting was discussed by Phyllis Bennett during the recent meeting of Backwater Friends Extension Homemakers Club. The ladies met at the home of Mrs. Howard Bemish, Jr. She was assisted by Mrs. Howard Bemish, Sr Group singing was led by Mrs. Bemish. Jr. Mrs. Bemish, Sr., read the meditation. Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurers’ report were given by Esther Rider. Mrs. Bemish, Sr., read a history of Papakeechie Lake. Elizabeth Leach and Fran Bowser are in charge of planning the club anniversary party. It is scheduled for April. The health'and safety lesson was given by Mrs. Rider. She explained about high blood pressure and hypertension.

Rhonda Black chosen Webster's Girls' Stater
The 1981 Girls’ State delegate and alternate have been selected by members of Herbert Kuhn Post 253, American Legion Auxiliary. North Webster. Rhonda Black, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Black and a junior student at Wawasee High School, has been chosen as delegate. She is president of the junior class, an honor roll student, a member, of the National Honor Society, F.G.A. and F.E.A. Her hobbies include ice skating, water sports and volleyball. Rhonda plans to attend college. Girls’ State alternate delegate is Susan Payne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Payne. Susan is a junior student at Wawasee High School and has been a cheerleader for three Rhoda Mock hostess for WCTU Members of Anna Bowers * Chapter of Women’s Christian Temperance Union met March 3 at the home of Rhoda Mock. Betty Barrett served as president pro tern due to the absence of Mary Wilcoxson. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Eva Lock. The treasurers report was given by Mrs. Barrett. 0 Mrs. Barrett gave devotions. She read from Romans 8.14-17. She also gave readings from, “Guide Posts" and “Our Daily Bread.” The closing prayer was led by Mrs. Lock. The time and location of the April meeting is to be announced. The bride-elect is a 1977 graduate of Wawasee High School. She is a.senior student at Bail State University. Muncie, where she is majoring in English. The bridegroom-elect graduated from Eastside High School in 1977. He is a senior student majoring in natural resources at Ball State University. An October wedding is being planned. Cassells entertain Messengers Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Cassell were hosts for the recent meeting of North Webster Church of the Brethren Messengers* Sunday School class A carry-in dinner was served at noon. Cassell led the group in prayer. D’Maris Miller, president, was in charge of the business session. The opening prayer was given by Howard Kiser Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were presented by Eva Lock. Devotions were given by Cassell.
