'Fiddler on the Roof' WHS spring musical

The Wawasee High School Drama Club and Music department proudly announce that the 1961 Wawasee musical will be the award winning "Fiddler on the Roof." The musical will be presented Thursday. Friday and Saturday evenings, March 26. 27 and 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wawasee High School auditorium. All seats are reserved and reservations may be made by calling Wawasee High School during normal school hours. "Fiddler” is the warm and touching story of Tevye, the dairyman, and his five daughters. Tevyes life is based on traditions and these traditions become threatened with each passing day. Although Tevyes precariously balanced world often threatens to come down around him, he manages to keep* his wry sense of humor about himself, his family, and his God. The story is set in the little Russian village Anatevka, but it could be anywhere. The people of Anatevka are faced with hard times, yet they confront their problems with humor and humanity. “Fiddler” is the story

Demonstrating the correct way to brush their teeth are Brian Kiefer, Jon Scheminske, David Schmahl and Clinton Chapman. Included in their study was a healthy snacks party. Each student brought good snack samples for good dental health.

Teresa Ogden is in charge of costumes, makeup, and props, while Jeff LeGro has designed and built the set for the play. Reservations are now being taken for the March 26,27 and 28 performance dates of "Fiddle- on the Roof.” The Wawasee Musk Boosters are sponsoring a dinner before the March 26th and 27th performances from 5-7 p.m. in the cafeteria annex at Wawasee. Tickets and information may be obtained by calling the high .school or be contacting a Music Booster. The dinner is open to the public and tickets may be purchased the evening of the dinner.

Students must be five years of age on or before September 1 to attend kindergarten classes. Kindergarten Roundup will be held April 21 at 7 p.m. in the North Webster Elementary School Cafeteria. Kindergarten teachers and the school nurse will give preliminary instructions with regards to preparing children for kindergarten class. Parents and prospective students are encouraged to be present. Certification of a students age by means of a birth certificate is necessary at the time of registration on April 21. Families with a child old enough for first grade in September, but who did not attend kindergarten this year, should contact the school office to arrange for readiness testing.

Cathy Cobbum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Cobbum, became the Syracuse School Spelling Bee champion after one hour of continuous spelling on Tuesday, March 3. There were 20 finalists from the fifth through the eighth grades.

Syracuse Brownies learn) j persond) community sdfety

Winter weather hasn't stopped Syracuse Brownie Troop 193 from having a good time. In January they drew pictures of what Girl Scouts would look like in the future, learned the Virginia Reel and danced to other types of music, formed and painted dancing dolls’from flour dough. During February the second grade girls tied the dough dolls together with yarn and glued them to pencils so the arms and legs would dance when jiggled. They had a visit from Fire Chief Kenny Johnson who discussed fire safety at home and explained how the volunteer department works. On February 26 the Brownies toured the Elkhart County Jail in Goshen where they saw the children’s detention area and the women’s cell block. Girls and leaders were ‘locked up’ for several minutes in the cells to enable them to understand the feelings of prisoners behind bars. Troop 193 also participated in the Vandalism at laundromat While on patrol March 9 Syracuse police officers noticed candy laying on the floor a the Wawasee Coin-O-Mat, 1000 S. Huntington. The investigating officer went inside the building, discovering the glass was pryed open from the candy machine and the back of another was broken. The glass in one dryer was broke out. Damage to the candy machine and its contents was $lO and the glass on the dryer was $75. They hate it Do you hate cigarette ashes’ So do ants. If you put plenty of cigarette ash in the places ants frequent and keep food out of their reach, they should stay away.

County students accepted into Alpha Lamba Delta Five Kosciusko County students have been accepted for membership in the Ball State University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta freshman academic honorary. Their initiation will be April 5 in Emens Auditorium. They are Dean R. Montel, r 2 Pierceton; Lyle Haney, r 2 North Webster; Jill AnnetteSliger, P.O. Box 182 North Webster; Lisa L. Meek 211 S. Lake Street, Syracuse; and Sabrina Jo Handgen, r 7 Warsaw. The purpose of Alpha Lambda Delta is to promote a high standard of learning and to encourage -superior scholastic attainment among freshmen students. Toward this goal, the organization recognizes and selects for membership all freshmen who achieved a 3.5 grade point ratio in the fall quarter or achieved a 3.5 overall accumulative grade ratio at the end of the winter quarter. Montel. who is majoring in computer science, is the son of Mr. and Mrs Merl Montel. Haney is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Galen Haney. He is majoring in accounting. Miss Sliger, who is majoring in music, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Sliger. Miss Meek is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Gareth L. Meek. She is majoring in accounting. Miss Cobbum earned the honor of representing Syracuse in the seventh and eighth grade Kosciusko County Spelling Bee Championship, in Warsaw, Tuesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. Finishing second to the champion was seventh grader Beth Roe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Roe. Both seventh and eighth grade winners were in the class of Mary Lou Dixon. Winning the fifth and sixth grade division was Julie Emmert, fifth grade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Emmert. She will represent Syracuse in the Kosciusko County Spelling Bee fifth and sixth grade finals, held in Warsaw on Monday. March 23, at 7 p.m. Finishing second in the fifth and sixth grade was Angie Kirkdorfer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kirkdorfer Both girls are students in Mavis Vanderveer's fifth grade classroom. The spelling bee is sponsored by the Syracuse Parent-Teachers Organization. Trophies are awarded to the winners and ribbont are awarded to the top three finishers in each division.
