Maple sap spurs Indiana Festivals
Maple sap is flowing from the maple trees and that's a sure sign that spring is just around the comer. Indiana celebrates the coming of spring with four maple syrup festivals scheduled during March, according to Lt. Governor John M. Mutz. You can have a hearty plate of pancakes covered with maple syrup and whole hog sausage at the Parke County Maple Fair in Rockville, February 28-March 1 and March 7-8. Y’ou can also watch the harvesting of maple sap and its transformation into mouth-watering maple syrup at the maple camps. Other highlights are demonstrations of quilting and pioneer crafts. In the early 1900’s the Chellberg Farm, located at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter, was the site of a commerical maple sugaring operation. On March 7-8 and 14-15 visitiors can tour this sugar bush operation and learn the history of maple sugaring, a process passed down from the Indians.
