And he appointed to be with him, and to be sent out to preach and have authority’; to cast out demons: Simon whom he sur named Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, who he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus. and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cannanean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him . . (Mark 3:13 19a RSV)
, Judas Iscairot
By REV. RALPH BURNS My name is Judas Iscairot — one of the 12 disciples that followed Jesus during His , ministry on earth Many people think me terrible and I guess rightly so. but I did have all of them fooled But let me begin at the beginning I watched Jesus as he came into public view and was overwhelmed when He called me to follow Him What haw I to lose I thought and probably much to gain And gain 1 did. for awhile " They, the 12. elected me to be treasurer of the group Now there wasn't much money in the treasury but it was enough to get me started in a desire for more It was great to be in this group I got to know all of them incluchng Jesus m a real way and* they all trusted me Day after day we trawlled here and there We were received well in some places and not so well in others I would just always follow the others and do and say the same things but with always the thought in my mind, can I use this for my own gam** My how the time flew by Before ’ one knew it three years had gone by Yes we all were still together The other! n men following Him our leader and holding unto every word he I spoke while I was waiting for a time 1 could really profit for myself And then the time came Some men from the temple called on me and asked me many questions about Jesus They told me they thought he was an imposter. that he wasn't really for real. Well that hit me pretty hard but when you think of it he really didn't look like or act like a king, which he was supposed to be Soon these men got down to the reason for their visit. They wanted me to help firs plan'to" turn Jesus over to them “What's your price", they asked “I don't know**. 1 replied, “how about maybe 30 pieces of silver?” I

Then one of the 12, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him 30 pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to .betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying. "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?" He said, “Go into the city as such a one, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says. My time is at hand; I will
thought in my mind they would balk at that but they didn't so all was arranged Jesus had. at this time, called together the twelve of us and wanted to meet us in an upper room to tell us a feu things. As we all got together I saw John, as always, sitting right next to Jesus James was there too and of course Peter as big as anything throwing his weight around I just took a seat at the table across from Jesus and tned to listen to Him but my mind was on the deal I made and the money I would receive. Jesus was saying something about leaving us soon and something else about eating the bread and drinking the cup to help us remember His death I don’t know what it all meant but then as I listened it hit me. He was talking about me. He was saying. "Behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me at the table ’’ How did He know 0 Who told Him’ 0h boy I'm in trouble I’ll just say what all the others are saying. “Lord Is It I?" Well that was the wrong thing to say for Jesus said. "Thou hast said, and what you must do. do quickly." I guess the others thought He meant that 1 should go and buy things necessary for the feast but I know what He meant. Judas go and prepare thy way to keep your part of the deal you made to betray me .As 1 looked into His eyes I knew he meant it so I got out of t here quickly Now to find the men of the temple and get things over with I finally found them and they had their soldiers with them so we proceded to the garden, for 1 knew Jesus was going there It was dark so we brought our lanterns and torches to help us see Yes just as 1 thought there ye** He said Jesus of Nazareth ", said one of the soldiers That was my cue to go and kiss him if he was Jesus I’ll

keep the passover at your house with my disciples,’" And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover. When it was evening, he sat at table with the 12 disciples; and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I Lord?" He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me. will betray me. The Son of man goes as it is written qf
never forget that moment or the words he said. "Judas, betray me the Son of man with a kiss?” That got me to thinking. Maybe I did the wrong thing. This thing is starting to boomerang on me What have I done? I’ve sinned and betrayed my best friend. Oh what can I do? I know. I*ll take the money back and that might help sooth my conscience As I appeared to the men in the temple I tried to explain to them that I had done wrong They laughed in my face. I was so angry I threw the 30 pieces of silver at their feet and ran out of the temple, found some rope and tied it around my neck and to a tree and hung myself. A fitly end for me you say. Yes. but it didn’t have to be that way. The Lord Jesus would have forgiven me for my wrong if I had asked him to. but I was too ashamed and proud - Now that pride has placed me in hell I rejected, betrayed the Lord for 30 pieces of silver. Friend, don't make the same mistake I made If you have rejected the Lord and have gone your own way, turn to Jesus and ask for forgiveness Jesus will forgive! Don't experience the same lot as Judas, don’t hear those words... too late, too late. ["BIBLE VERSE 1 “The eternal God is thy I J refuge, and underneath • j are the everlasting J | arms." ) j 1. him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I Master?" He said to him, "You said so." (Matthew 26:14-25) While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the 12, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders, saying. "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself." And throwing down the pieces of silver in the tempole, .he departed; and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money." So they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken bv the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the
Catholics to participate in Operation Rice Bowl
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, today (Wednesday) Catholics in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend will be able to participate in Operation Rice Bowl, the Lenten program of family sacrifice and prayer for the world's poor. "Since its inception in 1976. Operation Rice Bowl has raised over sl4 million” said John F. Martin, the diocesan coordinator for the campaign “This money enabled Catholic Relief Services to satisfy immediate food needs in emergency situations and to fight the root causes of poverty by supporting long-range, selfhelp projects in dozens of developing countries around the world.” i Once a week during Lent, participating families eat a simple low-cost meal and pray for those less fortunate than themselves The money saved through eating the frugal meal is placed in a cardboard "rice bowl" on the dining table. Each Sunday during the six weeks of Lent the family brings its contribution to church where it is collected with those of other families. CRS, the official relief and development agency of American Catholics, uses its portion to help millions who live in the most adverse conditions. Projects

By ED GENES. MINISTER How much should the Christian faith be forced on society? How far should Christians go in organizing political action? What is the limit of the Christian’s role in government? These questions are not unique to our day. Historically, defining the role of the Christian in society has been difficult From the Civil war to the Vietnam from prohibition to abortion; Christians have been caught in the dilemma — "To speak or not to speak” The real problem, however, does not seem to be whether or not Christians should take a stand, as much as on which '’soapbox” they choose to stand. Almost every Christian would agree that some things must be done in the name of moral decency But how far can

Christians compel others to accept Bible convictions in the name of, and on behalf of, Jesus Christ? As wrong as it may be to “Ban the Bible” from society, it may be equally questionable to “brand the Bible” upon society in a wholesale conversion of legislation to the Christian "platform.” Is legislated morality in the name of the Bible really God’s will? It seems not. First of all, legislated morality in the name of Christianity comprises the nature of the Church. The true purpose of the Church is the preaching of the Gospel to save the souls of men, not to save society. History has proven that the preaching of a social political gospel breeds doctrinal error, moral license and spiritual impotency in the life and ministry of the Church. Secondly, forcing the Christian faith on men compromises the

nature of conversion. True conversion works on the premise of changing the hearts of men. not their habits. Forcing society to an external adherence to Christian principles is the creation of a “graveyard morality.” All the heads and the feet 8 are turned in the same direction, but there is no life inside It is a dead morality. Thirdly, legislated morality in the name of Christianity compromises the nature of God’s Word. The Bible is neither a textbook on sociological ideals or a manual for political perfection.
