Warriors defeat Northfield in thrilling 84-82 overtime
By SHARON STI’CKMAN At Wawasee Friday, coming off a hard loss to Plymouth the Warriors bounced back to give Warrior fans an interesting contest. The game was close throughout and John Locke, having a good night, led the Warriors? to an 84-82 victory in overtime Wawasee 'got the tip and Todd Davis got the first basket for Wawasee Wawasee got the ball back and Troup put Wawasee ahead 4-0 Shafer made it 4-2 and Hipsher tied the score Long hit. an offensive foul was called on Hipsher. Long missed; but rebounded, passed to Davis and Wawasee lead by four Shafer scored. Wawasee missed and Shafer tied the score at eight Troup missed Harris rebounded and Johnson put Northfield ahead Geiger was fouled by Miller as he shot, the basket counted. Brian hit the free throw and Wawasee led 11-10. Dawes missed, but was fouled by Davis and hit two free throws. Wawasee lost the ball on a pass and Deeter put Northfield ahead by three. Locke saved the ball for Wawasee and Geiger scored Johnson got a long shot and Northfield again led by three Geiger missed. Troup rebounded and Geiger hit Wawasee stole it back and Long put Wawasee ahead Miller missed. Davis rebounded and Locke s king shot made it 19-16 A swish shot closed the gap to one and Miller was fouled by Koble. hit one and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 19 Wawasee got the second quarter tip. but missed and Hipsher put Northfield ahead A long shot by Locke tied it again A long shot by Hipsher gave the Norsemen the lead. Kosciusko County YMCA hosts qualifying meet at WHS
Kosciusko County YMCA hosted the state optional YMCA qualifying gymnastics meet on Saturday. Feb 14. at Wawasee High School The allday event included eight teams from Kosciusko County. Cass County * Logan sport*. BB Jordan Martinsville*. Fort Wayne SE. Kokomo. Huntington, Lafayette and Peru Kosciusko County placed first in team trophy winners with a 76 55 score. Peru, second, with 69 75. and Cass County, third, with 64 30 tn the age group trophies. Kosciusko was also first for 12 to 14 and the 15 and over category. The county, didn't have enough participants to qualify for the ll and under category, with Lafayette winning 11 and under Listed belou are Kosciusko County winners Vault competiton 11 and under. Missy Winger, fourth and Katnna Curtis, seventh. 12 to 14. Kathy Campbell, gold medal first and Kim Whaley, fifth Ln the 15 and over category . missed, Davis rebounded and Locke put Wawasee back in the lead. Northfield stepped out of bounds and Troup made the Warrior lead three. Johnson made the lead Five. Hipsher missed, but got his own rebound and made it 31-28 Long scored four more. Davis tipped in • a missed shot and Geiger hit two free throws. Hipsher got eight points for Northfield and at halftime Wawasee led 39-36. Shafer got the first basket of the third quarter. Wawasee lost the ball and Shafer put Northfield ahead Geiger gave Wawasee back the lead. Hipsher missed and Troup made the lead three. Northfield traveled. Troup scored and Wawasee had a five point lead Hipsher and Shafer each got a basket and Northfield again trailed by only one On ar nice play Waw asee passed to Geiger and he scored, Johnson scored, was fouled by Geiger and tied it at 47. Locke ran in to put W’awasee back ahead, a long shot by Dawes tied it, Long missed a layup, but Geiger rebounded and made it 51-49 Hipsher missed, got his own rebound and tied the score Troup passed to Geiger who was open underneath, he scored and was fouled by Deeter The free throw was good and Wawasee led 54-51. A long shot by Miller put them within three, but Locke hit a long shot and Wawasee led by three Miller got another long shot, Wawasee missed anjd Hipsher put Nor thfield ahead Long missed a shot, but Locke saved the ball and scored Davis fouled Dawes and he hit two At the end of the third quarter Northfield led 59-58 Wawasee put most of the reserve players in at the beginning of the fourth quarter and they proved themselves well, while giving the regulars a rest Locke hit well on long shots. Spunar rebounded well and with 57 seconds left the score was tied at 73 Geger fouled Johnson, but he missed the free throw. Daves rebounded and with 30 seconds left Geiger put Wawasee ahead with a nice basket. It looked like Wawasee had the game in the bag with eleven seconds on the clock

and a two point lead, but just as the buzzer sounded Hipsher got a shot off and tied the score at 75. Overtime Northfield got the first score of the overtime but Long tied it at 77. Long stole the ball, Locke was fouled by Dawes and hit one free throw. Northfield traveled. Dawes fouled Troup and he hit two. Miller got a basket. Northfield stole the ball, and Miller scored again The Noresmen stole the bail. Miller was fouled by Locke and made it 82-80. Long missed, Davis rebounded, missed and was tied up by Hipsher. Wawasee got the tip and Long tied the score with 48 seconds left. Geiger committed his fifth personal foul with seven seconds left, but Hipsher missed the free throw With four seconds left in the overtime Wawasee had possession, Troup passed to Davis who saw Locke open Locke shot a long shot as the buzzer sounded, the shot was good and Wawasee won 84-82 m overtime. Warriors downed by Cavemen
By SHARON STUCKMAN A small gathering of Wawasee fans traveled through the fog to Mishawaka to see the Cavemen outplay the Warriors in the third quarter and win 82-65 after Wawasee held their own throughout the first half. Mishawaka got the first tip and a basket by Ermeti gave them two, but Long tied the scope. O’Keefe was wide open to score and a great shot by Geiger tied it at four Ermeti hit one when he was fouled by Geiger. A layup by Todd Davis put Wawasee ahead, O’Keefe missed, Davis rebounded, scored, was fouled, hit the free throw and Wawasee lead 9-5. O’Keefe quickly cut that lead and Ermeti stole the ball and tied the score A long shot by- Geiger put Wawasee ahead but Obren tied it at 11. Troup put Wawasee ahead, but O’Keefe was fouled, bit two and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 13. Day put the Cavemen ahead
early in the second quarter, Wawasee lost the ball out of bounds and O'Keefe made the lead four. Locke went the distance of the court and scored. Coppens scored and the lead was again four. Koble was fouled, hit two, Hadary scored, fouled Koble and he hit two more. A long shot by Slabaugh made the lead four, but a jump shot by Geiger cut the lead to two. Slabaugh missed and Geiger tied the score. A long shot by Coppens put them ahead. Long missed, Koble rebounded and tied the score. Geiger stole it and a layup by Long put Wawasee back in the lead. Coppens tied the score, Hadary hit a long shot and a hook shot by Fredrick made the Mishawaka lead four. Geiger missed and O'Keefe hit. Geiger scored and at the half Wawasee trailed 35-31. O’Keefe scored, Troup hit and Geiger cut the lead back to two. Ermeti. O’Keefe and Fredrick scored before Wawasee could score and Wawasee trailed by 10. I JV slides past Northfield Northfield had caught up to within one with 45 seconds left to go. Wawasee missed. Northfield lost the ball out of bounds. Paulus was fouled and hit one free throw to put Wawasee ahead by two with 17 seconds left. Thorn got the ball back and was fouled, hit two and Wawasee led 47-43 with 7 seconds left, but Northfield was fouled and Wilcox hit two. Wawasee won by only two points. 47-45. At Wawasee on Friday the junior varisty made the game against the Norsemen of Northfield exciting. It was a very evenly matched contest. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee led by only one, in a low scoring period. At halftime the score was 20-19, with Wawasee leading A technical foul against Northfield in the third quarter gave Brian Walls a chance to add extra points with free throws and Northfield had trouble with being called for fouls Smith and Walls led the scoring for the Warriors and Hare and Thorn worked the boards well. Wawasee was leading 42-35 in the third quarter. But Kline scored well and fouls cost Wawasee.
The Cavemen got a 26 point lead and Wawasee couldn’t come closer than 10. At the end of the third quarter Mishawaka lead 5744. Coppens kept hitting on a well executed pass play that penetrated Wawasee defense and put him underneath. Wawasee couldn’t find the lost points and were defeated bv a score of 82-65. JV Falls Too The junior varsity also fell to Mishawaka. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 11. At halftime the Cavemen had pulled ahead 31-25. As in the varsity tame, all hope was lost in the third quarter when they trailed by 22 paints. The final score was Mishawaka 61, Wawasee 47. The Warriors play their final two games of the regular season this week end. Both games are at home. On Friday, senior recognition night, they face West Noble and on Saturday will host Bremen. Plymouth powerful in long, delayed game
When the Warriors did finally travel to Plymouth Thursday to play the game which had been rescheduled because of the girls regional and then rescheduled twice because of bad weather the Pilgrams proved their record in the Northern Lakes Conference was well deserved and they sewed first place when they overwhelmed Wawasee 96-68. Plymouth got the first tip and Skiles scored, but Geiger tied the score. That was the last time that the Warriors were to be tied with them. Skiles scored, stole the baD, was fouled by Kent Stichter. hit one free throw and Plymouth led 5-2. Wawasee lost the ball out of bounds and Sissel scored Stichter missed Neidlinger rebounded and Wendell made it 92. The Pilgrams got four more before Geiger could score for Wawasee. Davis scored and Long scored and the lead was cut back to five. Vancza scored, but Geiger kept Wawasee within five. Wendell hit. but Geiger scored, was fouled and cut the lead to four. But Skiles quickly put them back ahead 19-13 At the end of the first quarter Plymouth was leading 27-19. Wawasee had a very'cold night and Plymouth, especially Skiles, couldn't seem to miss. At the half they led 56-32. The Warriors scored only 14 points in the third quarter and the Pilgrams got 25. At the end of the third period they lead 81-46. In the final quarter Plymouth put in their substitute players and scored only 15. but Wawasee was too far behind to even hope and their spirits dropped They scored 22. but were' defeated by the awesome score of 96-68 Plymouth won the NLC title with the victory, stand 7-0 in the conference and well deseve to hold that crown. BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME AT WEBSTER A benefit basketbail game will be played in the North Webster Junior High School gym at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, for the Mike Fishbaugh family. The Fishbaughs are former North Webster area residents who lost their home in a recent fire. Parents* Night Saturday will be seniorparents’ recognition night for athletes, managers, cheerleaders, the chief, pompon girls and the pep band. Parents will be recognized with their senior student. Autographs-Photos Saturday will also be* autograph-photo night with players remaining on the floor after the varsity game for autographs, photos and to talk to adults and students.
