Syracuse girls, Webster boys win Cqpielot tournament
The Syracuse Yellow Jacket girls' basketball team and the North Webster Trojan boys' basketball team brought home the championship trophies in the Camelot Basketball Tourney finals last Thursday at Syracuse. They earned their victories in different manners, but the final results were very pleasing to the local fans. The Syracuse girls started slowly against the Akron Flyers and a 25-foot Akron shot which flew on a line straight through the basket at the end of the first quarter held the Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 advantage. Sheila Kleinrichert scored all six points and controlled the backboards to hold off the fast moving Flyers The Yellow Jackets continued to get the ball to Kleinrichert in the second quarter and she added six more points. At the same time the Yellow Jackets, were playing almost perfect defense to hold Akron scoreless. The score at halftime stood Syracuse 14-Akron 4.
New: Early bird swim for physical fitness for adults
On March 2 the Wawasee Adult Education Program will begin an all new “Early Bird Lap Swim” for adults. This is not a learn to swim.program but a fitness class for those who like to "wake-up” by exercising. Lap swimming has many advantages over the more traditional jogging. Here is just a short list of them: 1) Do not have to deal with heat-cold or inclement weather 2) Swimming is not a weightbearing activity like running, so there is no joint-pain, ankle or knee injuries or spinal compression 3) Besides being excellent
Tough Concord swim club stops Wawasee 408-94
By KIRK HUGHES The Wawasee Swim Club had its first meet of the season against a very tough Concord club. By a score of 94 to 408 the Wawasee club was defeated One of the big factors for this loss was due to some swimmers suffering from the flu and many others were out because of the music contest in Fort Wayne The meet had a total of 64 events and Wawasee scratched over 25 events, giving Concord a definite edge The Wawasee Swim Club is looking for children eight years «and underhand 11-to-12-year-olds to add depth Any interested persons may learn more about the program by visiting the Wawasee High School pool between 5:45 and 6:45 p m on Mondays. Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Any additional questions may be answered by viewing a practice, talking with the parents

During the second half of the game, the two teams were more evenly matched. Four additional players broke into the scoring column for Syracuse, but Akron could only add 4 points in each of the third and fourth quarters. The final score of 28-12 brought a smile to coach Dan Caskey’s face. The three tourney wins brought the Syracuse* girls team record to eight wins and four losses for the season. The boys’ championship game was a seesaw affair from beginning to end. The lead changed hands almost every other minute as first one team would get hot and then the other would follow suit. The Wakarusa boys had defeated North Webster earlier in the season and appeared to be on the verge of doing it again as they led by seven points with one minute and 32 seconds left in the game At that point lightning struck and it seemed the Trojans could do no wrong. baskets left the Trojans trailing by only one point with 15 seconds left. Brian Popenfoose then stepped forward as the hero of the night as the Flyers lost the ball on a turnover. He took the pass and dribbled straight to the free throw line to let loose a 15 foot jump shot which settled through the rim with two seconds left on the clock. The fans then emptied onto the court thinking the game was over, but Wakarusa had called a time out with two secdwids left. The floor was cleared of fans and the Indians' long inbounds pass was knocked away by Brian Keim to preserve the Trojan victory. Popenfoose led North Webster in scoring with 11 points and Jeff Roberts added 10 ponts. Trojan coach Phil Dick echoed everyone's feelings as he said, “Who would have believed that we could come back like that?”
